Maurie Service: Goodbye to a Gold Coast legend

Many people have had the honour of working with radio legend Maurie Service over his close to four decades on the Gold Coast.

Sadly, he lost his battle with cancer on Easter Saturday.

His radio career began back in the halcyon days of Melbourne radio in the 60s, where he worked casually at 3XY before joining the sales team at 3DB.

After stints at 3NE Wangaratta, 3TR in Gippsland and 3KZ, Maurie moved to the Gold Coast in the late 60s, where he became a ‘name’.

He did news and sport at 4GG before moving into sales as the station morphed into 4GGG, KROQ and Gold 92.5. In his later years, he joined community station 4CRB.

Maurie was a gentleman in the truest sense. He took time to welcome the ‘newbies’ and offered encouragement and advice to those very green newsreaders, just starting their radio careers, including myself.

He’ll be sadly missed.
