Jase & Lauren reign supreme as K & J drop further in Melbourne FM Breakfast radio wars
Christmas has come early for Nova 100’s Jase & Lauren, with Jase Hawkins, Lauren Phillips and Clint Stanaway extending their lead as Melbourne’s #1 FM Breakfast show in the latest radio ratings.
Whilst Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev and Nick (-0.8 to 9.4) and Gold 104.3’s The Christian O’Connell Show (-0.5 to 8.7) lost some ground – placing them second and third respectively among the FM Breakfast shows – not only did Jase & Lauren gain 0.5% to achieve an 11.5 share in GfK Survey 8, they’ve picked up 67,000 listeners in cume.
This is one of the best results since the station launched back in 2001 and it puts Jase & Lauren 2.1 share points ahead of their closest competitor.
Nova’s Group Programming Director Brendan Taylor says it’s a fantastic day for everyone at the network.
“The success of Jase & Lauren is just outstanding – to have the Number One show in Melbourne and the most listened to Breakfast show highlights the authentic connection the show and the brand has built with our audience and reflects the hard work of Jase, Lauren, Clint and the entire team both on and off the air.”

But the very expensive headache continues for the powers that be at ARN, with the KIIS duo who replaced Jase & Lauren – Sydneysiders Kyle & Jackie O – falling 0.1 to a 5.0 share in Breakfast, with a cume loss of 24,000.
That leaves them sixth among the FM stations and only marginally ahead of AM sports station SEN 1116.
Smooth FM’s More Music Breakfast with Mike Perso had a Christmas cracker of a book, rising from 7.0 to an 8.1 share.
Smooth 91.5 is also the #1 FM station in Melbourne with a 11.4% share.
Triple M had reason to celebrate – gaining 0.3 to now hold a 6.6 share in Breakfast, whilst ABC Melbourne rose half a point to 7.9.
Despite a slight drop (-0.7 to 19.3) the powerhouse AM team of 3AW’s Ross and Russ remain the overall leaders in Melbourne breakfast.
Well done Jase and Lauren. I always liked working with you labrat – you have a good heart mate.
Not enough is being said about Jase & Lauren having a larger audience than Kyle and Jackie O’s Sydney Audience
Am I reading this right that Jase and Lauren have more listeners in Melbourne than Kyle and Jackio have in Sydney? That’s an amazing achievement.
That’s correct shareholder. Jase and Lauren have 717,000 listeners in Melbourne. Kyle and Jackie have 713,000 in Sydney. Kyle and Jackie have 404,000 listeners in Melbourne. Jase and Lauren and not heard in Sydney.
Nova execs must just wake up chuckling every morning at the moment. I love seeing them stretch further and further ahead when this time last year they were pushed aside for the ‘bigger, shinier show’.
As certain a prediction could be. The poor taste, ignorant, crude and boorish Kyle has not delivered. Congratulations to those he shoved aside. Heads should roll. Shareholders cannot be so blind as to not see the major problem here. If this was to split the outrageous and obscene cost of the Sydney duo, then it is exposed and must surely be hurting the Melbourne bottom line which is suffering after one of the worst decisions in decades in Australian radio.
Brendan Taylor is the saviour of the nova network
What people should also be talking about, is the great position J&L have put Nova in against Kiis in the Melbourne and Sydney markets.
The two Nova Breakfast shows (J&L plus F&WwithKate) have a combined cume lead of more than 200,000 over K&J’s Sydney show (plus Melbourne relay).
Now, I hear you say, “it costs nothing to broadcast K&J into Melbourne, and you have less production staff”.
Sure, but is the combined Nova breakfast shows talent wages coming in at (or anywhere near) $20m a year? I bet you not.
This mean across those two main advertising markets, Nova breakfasts are way more profitable.
The profit can easily be invested in both shows production and marketing. PLUS with a Breakfast team in Melbourne, you get the benefit of free publicity of when they show up at local events.
When it comes to national sales, Nova’s sales team now can kick off the new year saying to agencies “I can give you nearly quarter of a million listeners more than ARN can in this demographic, and for less”!
ARN are stuck with only one way out.
My prediction (go back and read the surveys) about K&J not working in Melbourne was 100% spot on, and I’ll give you another…
Within three years, new management will be in place at ARN and they will cut a deal with K&J to get out of the contract (probably a lump sump like $80mil plus free advertising for their next venture). K&J will take the lump sum, build (another) new studio and do a deal with a streaming platform to host their show.
Its a nightmare of epic proportions for ARN
Congratulations ⭐️
Great team work
Congratulations guys, you deserve it.
KIIS, we warned you that you were making THE biggest mistake when you FIRED Jase Lauren and Clint for the disgusting overpaid duo. You didnt listen and are now paying for it in more ways than one.
Well done NOVA and the Jase & Lauren show.
