Is Singo preparing for a tilt at Nine Radio?
Could a new media empire be in the works for John Singleton?
The multi-millionaire entrepreneur now reportedly has Nine Radio in his sights.
It comes amid increasing industry speculation that Nine Entertainment is looking to sell its radio assets – Melbourne’s 3AW, Sydney’s 2GB, Brisbane’s 4BC and Perth’s 6PR.
Six years after selling his stake in Macquarie Media, news.com.au reports Singleton has told associates he’s preparing to take a tilt at Nine’s revenue-challenged radio division.
The 83-year-old is said to be behind a consortium of media players hoping to acquire Nine’s radio stations for a bargain price.
Back when he sold his minority shareholding to Nine, Singleton wouldn’t rule out a return to media investment in the future, telling The Australian “I’m still very interested in media.”
In 1994, Singleton purchased 2CH from AWA. Two years later, he acquired 2GB. By 2002, he had turned the Sydney talkback station’s fortunes around, with Alan Jones and Ray Hadley having both come across from 2UE.
To this day, Singleton remains close friends with Hadley, who only recently hung up the headphones after 43 years in radio.
Already this year, Nine has had an operating model reset with a new Executive Team, and positional changes within the individual radio stations.
More details could be forthcoming next week. Nine’s Acting CEO Matt Stanton will likely give additional information on Tuesday, February 25, during the organisation’s Half Year 2025 Results Briefing.
TBH as a Shareholder I’d rather he and a consortium have a crack at ARN – ARN Market Cap only sits at $192.5 Million – that’s just a big weekend for Singo – it would save us all from the current executives at ARN
Get the Band back together.
At 83 is Singo that interested in Nine?? Stay retired and enjoy the view.
fingers crossed Singo does radio
