Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery?

Staff Writer

Nova 100‘s Chrissie, Sam and Browny have been airing a segment called ‘Deano’s Pitch’ for the past 18 months, an idea that seems to have inspired an eerily similar segment on Fox FM Breakfast.

Friday morning saw Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev and Byron debut a segment featuring producer Tim James, where he pitches a new idea to the show’s EP.

Deano’s Pitch has seen Nova 100 Breakfast anchor Dean Thomas successfully pitch ideas including Know Your Stefanovics, Hangin’ with Deano and Surprise Guest – all which have become regular segments.

Here is Deano’s Pitch from Friday, a new finance segment where he gets Toady from Neighbours (Ryan Moloney) to do his taxes, after Margot Robbie revealed in a recent Nova interview that she had previously done so.

And for comparison’s sake, here is Fox FM’s new segment featuring Tim James called ‘Hey Sickie’, where listeners call their bosses live on-air to chuck a sick day from work.

Fox FM have also made a number of similar choices to Nova 100 regarding their lineup, including the introduction of a former AFL player and the decision to start comedian Dave Thornton an hour later, at the same time as Sam Pang.

How about neither?

Are Nova actually suggesting they invented putting an AFL player onto a breakfast show?

Really?

Did their show create the idea of someone pitching an idea to the show? Didn’t Horgs used to pitch ideas to Hamish & Andy?

Oh yeah, and ‘Chrissie’s Celebrity Stuff’… I’ve never heard a female breakfast host do regular gossip updates.

What about ‘Sam’s Diary’… Haven’t Kyle & Jackie O been doing a best of ‘diary’ segment on a Friday for years?

Also, didn’t MMM have a comedian, Mick Molloy start at 7am well before Chrissy, Sam & Browny?

if all you’re reading from this is the an AFL player point, then you clearly have not fully understood the article…

blatant ripoff

Why is anyone surprised here?

This is what fox fm/austereo has done for years and very successfully at times.

However I will say this, if you are going to steal a segment, which they quite obviously have tried to do here, make sure your version is better than the original or there is a twist to how you do it. This was all a little embarrassing.

When you are over a share point behind the show you’re copying… might be time to come up with some fresh ideas.

fair enough

Horgs had inventions which were nothing to do with radio segment ideas or pitches,

If you have ever heard both products, one is a best of package (k&J) which all stations have, the other is completely different.

your last point, yeah that’s fair enough.

but you have to look at these pitch segments on stand alone basis and you can’t tell me that it’s not a bit stinky.

i listen to both podcasts and i can tell you I was pretty shocked!

Tim James is the best James, I don’t care who his brother is. Leon is a rude pig.

To be honest, I couldn’t care less who stole who from what, nothings new in radio bla bla bla. Merrick and Rosso did the Tall Ship before Hamish and Andy etc. etc.

All I care about is whether it’s entertaining or not – the fact is one segment was very funny, with great turns of phrase and genuine laughs from all on-air. The other was a low energy, awkwardly stilted break that actually made me whince at the sound of sickly coughing on-air.

No wonder CSB (&D!) are #1.

The Nova bias from Radio Today continues…

Yeah why is radio Today so biased towards Nova ?
I see that all the time.

You are kidding right! SCA playing the hurt little flower…’everyone’s against us’…. give me strength.

Maybe if you didn’t create content like this, they wouldn’t write about you.

is this like one of those obvious 8:10am phoners to fire up the audience?

(….mick molloy on from 7a for 8 years on hot breakfast. hamish and andy had ‘the people’s segment’ where listeners pitched radio segments, luke darcy has been on hot breakfast for 8 years…. but all that’s irrelevent and should not incite more nova vs fox petty ridiculousness)

be credible and a little more insight-driven with your writing ‘staff writer’, not mischievous and tacky. what’s next, ‘hughsey’s pregnant, click to see the pics’?!

Interesting comment containing a show’s initials as being #1.

Wrong.

3AW’s John and Ross followed by Neil Mitchell are streets ahead in first place.

By a margin of three to four times the share.

Austereo 101.

They’ve done it before, and they’ll continue to do it again.

Some of the stuff that goes on up the Central Coast will bring tears to your eyes.
