Gold Coast Ratings: Hot Tomato storms to massive lead

Former Assistant Editor

A truly phenomenal result for 102.9 Hot Tomato is the stand out highlight from the first Gold Coast radio ratings of 2020.

After finishing last year as the market leader, just ahead of closest rival 92.5 Triple M Gold Coast, Hot Tomato leaves the M’s and all others in its wake with a whopping +7.7 increase in share.

That increase takes its overall share among People 10+ to 20.6%. triple j is in second place with bump to 10.5% (+1.1) as Triple M falls to 10.3% (-1.7).

In the first survey since long-time Breakfast host Sean ‘Flan’ Flanagan retired, and was replaced by Drive host Paul ‘Galey’ Gale, the Hot Tomato Brekky show skyrockets to 20.3% (+7.7).

triple j’s Sally & Erica are now the #2 Breakfast show, with a 10.4% share (+0.3).

GfK notes that Gold FM became 92.5 Triple M and Macquarie Sports Radio became 4BH as of February 2.

The first Newcastle survey for the year will be released on May 15, but all following GfK surveys are on hold due to Government restrictions.

Survey Period: Feb 2 to April 11.

Amazing results for hot tomato. The breakfast has that chemistry and yes that local appeal. If you live on the Gold Coast why would you want to listen to a show where half the hosts don’t live there. It’s okay for a national show but not with a local market as small at the Gold Coast

Congratulations! But i am a little miffed. I live in the same street as the lady on Triple M here on the gold coast in tugun so she is definitely local and i pretty sure Spida lives in sanctuary cove doesnt he? my boss lives there and says spida owns a lot of property there and that he sees Spida there all the time. maybe I’m wrong but i think I’m correct. why do you say the other shows aren’t local. i know chloe maxwell she lives here and so does richard fowler he’s at main beach. the weather guy lives here too. well me must as he is on tv every day here. surely spida and his wife live together here. the boy on Sea FM the rugby league definitely lives here and the other boy he is on radio with does too as i read a story about his house here and his baby. and my daughter said she won a competition on sea fm and went to their big studios in broadbeach. sorry but i am just a bit confused with your comments about being the only local show. thank you.

This is a direct result of the loss of local focus by SCA stations. Everyone on the coast knows that Hot Tomato is the only truly local station amongst the major players!

The loss of heritage brands Gold FM and Sea FM to the generic Triple M/Hit has had a major impact as well.

The “other” station figure is pretty high too – stations like Rebel FM and Breeze FM are widely listened to on the coast, as are the community stations like 94.1, Juice and Metro.

SCA – Fail.

Dear Susan Maronne,

Commercial station Hit90.9:
Lise and Sarah (1/2 of the breakfast show) are based in Brisbane and are only on the Gold Coast every couple of days.
Hughesy and Ed, Carrie and Tommy, Ash London, The Danny Lakey Late Show are not based on the Gold Coast.

Commercial station Triple M:
Kennedy/Molloy, Moonman, Footy shows, Aussie With Becko are not based on the Gold Cast.

Hope that helps!

Whippy back on the Gold Coast nailing it. Who at SCA thought it was a good idea to just let Moyra and Paul Gale walk over to hot tomato? Obviously someone with no respect for local market talent. Hot Tomato will keep winning the ratings and the battle on being a local station which the Gold Coast clearly loves.

The girls for the hit breakky show live in Brisbane and do the show externally from what I believe @susan

@susan

Yes you are confused. Sea FM no longer exists which kind of proves the point if locals are still referring to Hit as Sea FM.

Sort of laughing here. Love you guys but I gotta say …… local? You guys have Kyle and Jackie O out of sydney don’t you? Just seems these posts are all from Hot staff. Bit unprofessional guys. You are owned by an interstate company and you too take interstate shows and yes you pre-record and aren’t always live. Don’t stoop to low levels. You are already winning so no need to trash the others on falsehoods!

@Ryan Mitchell

Might wanna fact check before you make a clown of yourself. They haven’t had Kyle and Jackie for months, all the shows are from their Gold Coast office and they are all live. So not sure where you are getting your falsehoods from??? No one has ever mentioned ownership.

Hmmm SCA need to blood their new talent here on both stations. Who would be next in line?

Ned

Emily Jade
Paul Gale
Christo

Moyra Major
Simon Baggs
Mal Lee

These names clearly mean something to the Gold Coast audience.

And Hot Tomato staffed by so many great people SCA have let go over the years.
Nice win for local radio.

Surely Bella must go in to Hit Brekky now. It’s the only option

Craig

Wouldn’t want to be building a new show on MMM or Hit on the Gold Coast right now. Stick with what you have and just hope for the best. It’s all you can afford.

There is a desperate need for fresh blood on the MMM brand in the programming department. Corey Kay, Andrew Very and Trent Towson have all had enough time to try and make this work.

Bella Frizza for breakfast. She knows the Gold Coast and lives there.

Ratings don’t matter. SCA Gold Coast will still win their usual 15 Acra’s for the year.

You can’t have a breakfast show broadcasting from another city and expect it to grow just cut your losses.

Bella Frizza for breakfast.

I was a big fan and so were the GC when Gold FM carried the ‘Real Music’ music format. Look at it now…This what happens when you have a bland repetitive music format.
