Carindale crowned KIIS 97.3’s Million Dollar Suburb

Carindale has been crowned KIIS 97.3’s Million Dollar Suburb, with local listener Michelle earning her chance to win $1 million live on air this morning.

Michelle was left in shock yesterday when Robin, Kip and Corey Oates arrived at her home to reveal that her suburb had won the title, putting her in the running to become Brisbane’s next millionaire.

When asked her favourite things about the suburb, Michelle highlighted the green and leafy surrounds, the carpeted floors at the local shopping centre and the Carindale Hotel’s margaritas.

For Michelle and her family, the timing couldn’t have been more poignant.

Three and a half years ago, with their youngest child just six months old, her husband Ian suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and had to be brought back to life four times.

Since then, the family has faced ongoing challenges – from selling their home to changing schools – but through it all, Michelle has remained resilient.

When asked what a million dollars would mean, Michelle said “It would go towards trying to rebuild our life again – and giving my family a holiday after a really tough few years.”

But it all came down to this morning inside the KIIS 97.3 studio as Michelle stood along her family, faced with 100 boxes and only one containing the life-changing fortune.

Choosing box number 28 — the same date her husband was revived from cardiac arrest — the million-dollar moment slipped just out of reach, with the prize money hidden in box number 42.

Incredibly, it was the very number her husband suggested she choose. But in a touching twist, the family was gifted an all-expenses-paid holiday to Tangalooma Island Resort.

“This is what it’s all about,” said Kip Wightman. “It’s about creating unforgettable moments for Brisbane families who truly deserve them.”

Robin Bailey said “Hearing Michelle’s story and seeing her strength reminded us why we love doing what we do.”

Corey Oates said “I’m so glad we could give them something to smile about. They’re a family who deserve it and more.”
