Brisbane’s first snow day

KIIS 97.3’s Zach & Dom have helped Brisbane tackle its reported identity crisis by building the city’s first ski run which was unveiled by former Olympian Steven Bradbury

After watching a Channel 7 report suggesting the river city is struggling to lure tourists due to a lack of international identity, Zach and Dom wondered why.

Brisbane is close to beaches and it has plenty of sunshine, so what’s missing?

The pair agreed the missing drawcard is in fact, snow.

As a result, Zach & Dom created Brisbane’s first ski run to fill the missing piece of the city’s culture and attract attention.

“Brisbane already had the sun, the beaches, and the laidback lifestyle the rest of the country dreams of. There’s only been one thing missing to truly make us the perfect city: a world-class ski run. Now, nothing can stop us,” Dom Fay said.

Co-host Zach Mander added, “We’ve already got the 2032 Summer Olympics – now we can throw our hat in the ring for the 2034 Winter Games too.”

The ski run measured 12 metres long and 3 metres wide, making it officially Queensland’s longest ski run. It might also be Queensland’s only ski run…

Of the many honours that have come Steven Bradbury’s way since winning Winter Olympic gold, he reflected on this as a momentous milestone.

“I thought things for me had kind of bottomed out a few years ago when I spoke at the Victorian and Tasmanian Furniture Removalist Association conference. But this is a whole new low,” Bradbury said.

As for the experience of going down the slope itself, Zach & Dom both described it as life-changing.

“It was exhilarating,” Zach said. “I think I got clocked reaching speeds as high as 10km/hr.”

Dom even became a bit emotional.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to ski within view of a CityCat,” he said.

“I never thought that would be possible before today. Dreams really can come true.”
