Brisbane Nova’s Maddy Rowe entertains Suncorp as Genes

There was a familiar voice leading the pre-game entertainment on Saturday night at the Brisbane Broncos v Canberra Raiders match at Suncorp Stadium, as Nova 106.9’s own Maddy Rowe took to the stage as her moonlighting musical alias – Genes.

Maddy Rowe can be heard on Nova 106.9 in the afternoons, but when she is not on the airwaves she is putting her musical talent to work as Genes, collaborating with Australian artists like Young Franco and Kilter to create new music.

Initially putting her singing and songwriting talents to work behind the scenes, Maddy took a leap of faith as Genes in 2019 and put herself in the spotlight.

“I knew my music was good, and I wanted it to be listened to, so I thought why don’t I just put it out there myself?” said Maddy.

The name Genes is a nod to the music within her which was clear from a young age.

Starting out in her bedroom at just 11, Maddy’s passion for singing and songwriting eventually took her to YouTube where she showcased her talent and was quickly scouted by EDM DJs seeking vocalists for their productions.

Frustrated by the delays and constant uncertainty of behind-the-scenes songwriting, Genes’ pivot to her own musical project brought an opportunity to showcase her prowess through a new and more personal lens.

It’s something that has come with a lot of lessons, she admits, but now, she has complete freedom to inject her personality into every facet of her work; something shown in the colourful vision that has unravelled itself over the last two years.

It’s a vision that began as she introduced herself through 2019’s debut single ‘Give It Away’, a pop entrance that showcased the heights of her sound and the personality layered within it.

Since then, Genes has been on a pop music streak; her second single ‘When I’m Around You’ being a “silky and romantic” take on her sound while her third single ‘Better’ welcomed yet another edge to Genes’ multi-dimensional pop songwriting.

Balancing her music career with her 12-3 pm radio gig at Brisbane’s Nova, Maddy prepares her debut EP, scheduled for release this October.

“As long as I’m enjoying the music that I’m making, I’ll keep doing it,” said Maddy.

Listen to Maddy on Brisbane’s Nova 106.9 from 12-3 pm weekdays.
