ARN’s Duncan Campbell on Survey 1: “Christian O’Connell has endeared himself to the Melbourne audience”

ARN Chief Content Officer Duncan Campbell is singing the praises of what he himself describes as the powerhouse that is Melbourne’s Gold 104.3.
As the #1 Melbourne FM station in Survey 1 for 2023, Gold is celebrating its best start to the year in recent times.
In Breakfast, the Christian O’Connell Show rose from 9.9 to 11.5, it’s best result to date.
Mornings and afternoons also went up, as Gold leads the pack among the 40 to 54s.
In an interview with our sister publication RadioInfo, Campbell paid tribute to the station and its entire team:
“It’s a big radio station now. Cumes of 1.3 million plus, and Christian O’Connell up again by a good percentage.
“The station is dominant across the day in terms of FM share, and in the weekends as well.”
“I think it’s a really impressive radio station.”
“Christian has endeared himself to the Melbourne audience very quickly. He shares his life, he tells great stories and there is habitual listening being formed there every day.”
Campbell says even after years of broadcasting success in the UK, O’Connell is still hungrier than ever to make great radio.
“He doesn’t rest on any laurels at all. He just wants to produce the best content.”
“The feedback we get from listeners is that they really see him as a friend. They know about his life. They share it. They enjoy it … that equals tuning in in big numbers, which is fantastic.”

The issue for ARN is KIIS 101.1. Somehow they need to get this happening.
ARN have stuffed up KIIS in Melbourne. Really feel for Jase when the ‘ suits ‘ are in town.
How long does it take, Fox are killing them now. Next Triple M will even be beating them.
Sad to watch.
I would like to hear from Duncan Campbell on how he plans to fix kiss 101.1 instead of going on about a show developed and produced at austereo Kyle and Jacket and a show created in the uk Christian O’connel. You can only ” sell ” Christian and Kyle’s show so many times. Let’s hear about the 101.1 plan, mix in Adelaide, Perth and the other markets that arn never seem to get right.
The last few breakfast shows on Gold FM have all been number one FM though.
Christian is no different. ARN should focus on KIIS Melbourne as it has never done very well under ARN management.
To MP at 8.23am. The Christian O’Connell Show is not a show created in the UK. It is created in Richmond, Victoria, Australia every weekday from 6am. The only part of it that was created in the UK is Christian himself (although now he’s an Aussie citizen). The co-hosts (Jack & Pats), producers, and show audio producers, show online content developers and Gold104.3 Content Director are all Australian. He’s not talking about Oxford Street, he’s talking about Bourke Street. I’d suggest his research is so thorough that he knows more about Melbourne than many of his listeners.

Jo & Lehmo achieved #1 once (S7/17). Breakfast was dominated by MMM and Fox in the Melbourne market. Gold was always strong across the workday but has really elevated its position to one of dominance over the past few years. Well done to them all.
