And then there were none

First Jackie. Now Kyle has gone MIA.

This morning’s ‘best of’ compilation of Kyle & Jackie O flagged no Kyle and no Jackie O on KIIS Breakfast, with Kyle away, unwell.

It comes just days after their much-publicised on-air blow up, and Jackie’s decision to take a few days off to – as Kyle Sandilands put it – gather her thoughts.

What is going on? That is the $64,000 question. Wait, make that a $200 million question.

Rarely do articles on a radio duo evoke such a hostile response, not just toward the people in the story, but those who write the story, myself included (as my job requires).

And despite the barrage of comments suggesting ‘It’s just a big publicity stunt for ratings’ or ‘Nobody cares,’ the reaction on social media and to the Radio Today inbox every time the latest chapter of the Kyle & Jackie O story unfolds would suggest otherwise.

No one is taking their eyes or ears off this car crash anytime soon. Either it’s a carefully curated publicity ploy or it’s the real deal. Those close to Jackie say it’s very real.

Either way, it will need to be resolved sooner rather than later.

And given how much ARN has riding on this show, whatever the outcome, it will be felt across the entire company. That must be making for some uncomfortable conversations inside the building.

Is it legit? Are they imploding? Are they trying to blow the whole thing up?

Only Kyle and Jackie O themselves can answer those questions, and I’m sure they will, in their own good time and in their own unique manner … provided they do KIIS and make up.

Sarah,
Have you asked ARN management as yet if HR has become involved in this workplace issue? With Kyle’s remarks in the workplace/on-air to Jackie, plus his claim that other work colleagues were “terrified” to confront Jackie I would think it was obvious to all and sundry that, if it’s not a stunt, HR has to be involved. I have seen HR in other big companies become involved in much smaller issues than this. One question to ARN management will possibly answer the other question of, fair dinkum or stunt?

So after years of sitting next to this guy bullying people and making horrendous comments, the straw that broke the camel’s back was a comment about Jackie’s astrology affecting her work?
It says a lot then, about where Jackie draws the line. And that’s assuming the segment wasn’t a publicity stunt.

This is a cautionary tale to all broadcasting outfits not to become overly-leveraged on one asset—-like ARN has done with K&J. Apart from the exorbitant sum spent to keep the pair in the stable for a decade, the KIIS Network has for too long tied its brand almost exclusively to K&J. Until the addition of Smallzy, KIIS was essentially a breakfast show and a bunch of other generic dayparts. They’d made no attempt to build listener loyalty across the day (or weekend). As is now painfully apparent, this strategy can be ruinous if your principal asset goes belly-up. ARN has made their bed….now we all get to watch them lie in it.

@Anthony

please. Kyle went on a 7 minute rant calling the engineering team gay homos.. i made a formal complaint and nothing was done.. KJ are above everyone and have never been pulled up on it. Their contract is way to tight and will get paid out even if they do something wrong. Even the extra censor and technical costs needed to keep them on air was paid by ARN not KJ
maybe all staff that have been bullied should stand together and try get some money while there is ANY left..

can everyone reading this submit a complaint to ACMA.. https://www.acma.gov.au/complain-program-tv-or-radio
This is the only way ARN gets out of this is. If Kyle is not allowed to be on air he breaches his contract. This saves all stations and jobs. I am surprised Allison is quiet and i hope that means she is thinking of how to take over.. Grant broadcasters was worth more than ARN market value!!
