$5 million buried treasure up for grabs at Kyle & Jackie O’s first Melbourne OB

Reporter

Whatever you might say about them, they’ve never been ones to do things by halves.

Now, Kyle & Jackie O are preparing to hold their first outside broadcast in Melbourne since their KIIS FM show was networked down south … and they’ll be making their presence felt with a competition ARN’s describing as the most thrilling to ever hit Australian breakfast radio: The $5 Million Dawn Dig.

In short, there’ll be five million bucks buried on a beach and listeners will have the chance to dig it up.

Starting today (Monday February 24) listeners can tune in for their chance to secure a spot in the dig.

Then, on Friday April 11, The Kyle & Jackie O Show will broadcast live from Melbourne’s St Kilda West Beach, where 200 buried bags will each contain various cash prizes.

Only one, though, will hold the ultimate $5 million jackpot.

Of this morning’s announcement, Jackie O said: “We’re going back to where it all started, digging for cash. We’ve had success with digging. But this time, it’s not a million dollars. That’s small fry. You need a big chunk of cash like $5 million!”

Kyle added: “We thought we should make it $2 million, but you’ve got nothing left if you buy a house. We thought we’d make it $3 million, but we’ve never liked the number three. $4 million sounds like a better number, and then we thought that we should make it $5 million buried on the beach.”

Listeners can call for their chance to take part in the dig by tuning in to The Kyle & Jackie O Show from 6am Monday on KIIS 1065 in Sydney, KIIS 101.1 in Melbourne or on the free iHeart app.

5 million dollars, or 62.5 full time salaries (80k). Time to start looking over shoulders again… they need to make another 13 people redundant on top of the 50 at the end of last year to balance the books.

Ah, the old Keymania competition from the 1960s just under another name. What’s old is new again.

Am I right in saying that this is their first Melbourne based promotion? After all this time?

Money can’t buy you respect or morals.

My eyes glazed over when I saw this desperate story.
It’s to the point where I don’t believe a word either of them say.

That’s a very expensive promotion that won’t sway Melbourne at all.

$200 million investment, regular six-figure “Noise” plus at least five million dollars given away for one promotion in a market that doesn’t like Kyle and Jackie O… money doesn’t grow on trees. If I were an ARN employee, I’d be preparing for a redundancy.

i guess when you’re paying all the money in the network to the hosts you have to rely on an insurance comp?

Seems like there could be better ways to spend that money

Is it purely a coincidence that K&JO are bribing Melbourne (and I guess also Sydney) with $5 Million at a time 2DayFM is running a “Million Dollar Postcode Bingo” competition?

Either way, one wonders what ex-employees of both ARN and SCA must feel about such big money giveaways.

Probably Kyle will call sick…or will be whinging all the show how Melbourne is bad and boring and he doesn’t give a f*****

Are ratings that bad?

There are 200 sandbags on the beach:

1 has $5 million (0.5% chance)
10 have minor prizes (5% chance)
189 (!) have nothing (94.5% chance)

Only one contestant gets a shot at the $5 million, with a 94.5% chance of walking away empty-handed—not even a consolation prize.

For context, you’d have a better chance flipping a coin and getting heads seven times in a row (1/128).

The second chance dig lets “up to” 199 contestants search “up to” 199 sandbags for minor prizes—the $5 million is gone. The real challenge? Finding 199 Kyle & Jackie O listeners in Melbourne.

This is the big thing they were teasing?
24 Feb 2025 - 6:18 pm

According to the T’s and Cs, it’s an 11 in 200 chance, otherwise you walk away with nothing? Cool…

Clearly they’re really committed to growing their Melbourne audience.

It’s surely just an insurance comp anyway! Unlikely to be a winner

Sounds like a Phil Dowse special

Who cares about Melbourne?

So what’s in it for Sydney??
