2DayFM switches its music format

Reporter

2DayFM has switched its music format from ‘The Hits Before They Hit’ to an Adult Contemporary mix of new music alongside familiar, older tunes.

SCA says the swap was made last week.

Explaining the reasons behind the change, Amanda Lee, Head of Hit Metro Content, said “Twelve months ago, we introduced a new music format on 2DayFM across all day parts.”

“Since then, the Sydney radio landscape has shifted significantly, with changes across a number of heritage shows on competitor networks, creating an opportunity for new audience sampling not seen in decades.”

“At the same time, listener feedback has been clear, audiences want a balance of familiar songs they know and love, alongside variety and new and Australian music at the right moments throughout the day.”

Lee says 2Day’s refreshed format delivers that balance, blending proven hits with discovery in key dayparts to create a more engaging and distinctive listening experience for a broader under-40 audience, while continuing to champion new and local music.

Ahh the old “ our listeners told us “ feedback
But will the same songs be played everyday ?

Deckchairs on the Titanic comes to mind.

There really needs to be a complete root and branch review of what constitutes a music station in the Australian commercial radio (AM and FM) landscape.

The same tired songs from the same tired artists on stations (in Melbourne at least) from Gold to MMM and everything in between. When was the last time Gary Numan for example was played on commercial radio? What about Black Cab or Woodland Hunters… both respected Melbourne bands.

My son is 19 and very passionate about music across a broad range of genres. He despises commercial radio and curates his own music playlists on Spotify and other platforms that he happily subscribes to.

Here we go again….more confusion for listeners… Another “new 2Day”. Name doesn’t fit new format at all. It looks like “hits and oldskool” plus RNB Fridays playlist.
The idea is great…radio for Millennials (from 90s till now) with focus on 90s and Noughties (like Gold focusing on 80s).
Was sampling during the week and I have to say….way too much Bruno Mars , The Script “Breakeven” and Walk the Moon “Shut up and dance”…..

Another format change Sadly as fragmentation and streaming services like Spotify increase, the situation will only get worse for commercial music radio

I know 2DayFM used it way back in the 1990s, but…

No mention of how they’ve picked up WSFM’s former slogan? Afterall, it had about 6-7 years of use by 101.7 and was theirs as recently as 18 months ago!

Anyway, I’m sure if this format doesn’t resonate there’ll be yet another change in a year or so from now. Already I’m reasonably sure there’s likely to be a new brekky show within the next six months or so, despite a TVC campaign for Nath & Emma launching (pretty much just before the survey break – what’s with that?) a few weeks ago.

One wonders though, why there’s resistance to the idea of completely relaunching 2DayFM (right up to the station name) for a new era in Sydney radio. 13 years since 104.1 was last a top rater and with 2DayFM consistently at the bottom end since 2014, the time for SCA to do a Smooth/KIIS-style reset is well overdue!

Ahh wonderful. Another station I don’t need to listen to.

Test more than 600 songs for a change… and test songs that aren’t in the current lists…. You already know what tests from the current list – so why test them again and again…

There’s so much great music that have been radio hits… these missing songs are the key to making great music radio stations… but for some reason Australian Heads of Content & Strategy seem to be scared of music that isn’t on their own personal playlists.

If I have to hear Montell Jordan “This Is How We Do It” again…. oh wait…

I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a new breakfast show next year, maybe the Jackie O breakfast show….

Sorry Steven Haby

But i think 99% of people would rather hear INXS, ACDC or Barnesy on Triple M rather than Woodland Hunters or Black Cab

Why do they need to change every 12 months? Wanted it better to go the demographic we like are xennials and stick with it. Younger people grew up with steaming and got to experience a wide spectrum of music. Just stop flogging the horse, play some good music that is oldies can relate to because we never grew up streaming we are probably the most committed listeners around.

2Day FM definetly needs to reband instead of changing formats again (for how many months > a year ?) I listened for awhile the other day & switched off. (Do some people feel 2Day FM = Hits of today ?) KIIS rates better after changing format from MIX. Smooth improved after changing from the VEGA/Classic Rock 95.3 days.
