Ugly Phil replaces Mike Hammond on WSFM Mornings

Staff Writer

Phil O’Neil – Ugly Phil – will take over as host of the 9am to 1pm shift on Australian Radio Network’s (ARN) WSFM.

O’Neil replaces veteran broadcaster Mike Hammond who had hosted the program since 2018.

O’Neil has filled in for Hammond in the past and boasts an extensive media career, including hosting the nationally syndicated Hot 30 Countdown with Jackie O back in the ’90s. He also hosted Nova Drive, various slots at Triple M and a number of shows in the UK.

WSFM content director Mike Byrne said: “When Phil ‘Philled in’ on WSFM recently, the feedback from listeners was incredibly positive. I knew he would make an excellent addition to WSFM’s stellar line up and I am so pleased that he decided to join us.”

O’Neil too appeared to be pleased to be officially joining the station.

“After Joe Biden’s recent success, this could be the second greatest comeback I’ve ever witnessed. I can’t believe how lucky I am and now I can stop hassling Duncan  [Campbell] and Mike for a gig,” he said.

The show kicks off on Monday.

This is just the latest of many talent shuffles being crammed into the end of 2020.

Just last night, ARN stablemate Mix 102.3 revealed Jodie Oddy would not return to her hugely successful Adelaide breakfast show.

Outside of ARN, Eddie McGuire and Luke Darcy are leaving Triple M in Melbourne, with SCA yet to announce the new show. SCA is also yet to confirm its lineup for 2Day FM Breakfast in Sydney.

In addition, Sally & Erica have left triple j Breakfast, and over in Perth the Hit 92.9 Breakfast show of Xavier, Juelz & Pete will not survive the rebrand as 92.9 becomes Triple M, and Mix 94.5 moves to fall under the Hit umbrella.

A new show will be announced for Triple M Perth shortly as well.

Well done WS.
With some new songs being added to refresh the playlist and the addition of Phil, you are on a winner.

That is the absolute best news I’ve heard in almost a whole month! Congratulations, Phil and everyone at WSFM – Phil is one of the best people, and best radio professionals I’ve ever worked with. And probably the only one I’ve worked with at four different stations. Awesome news, you’ve made the entire universe’s day.

I’m sure Vivienne Kelly will agree with me on this one – WS need to have a good look at their gender targets

I’ve loved Ugly Phil since he came to Adelaide in the 90s and completely changed night radio and I definitely rate him in the top 5 presenters in Australia. Great move for WS.

How many false starts in how many cities now ? You know you’re in trouble when you’re playing the same music as when you started

You have to be kidding.

I could not stand this guy when he was on Nova drive all those years ago.

ARN must be desperate for talent if they are putting U P Oneil on radio

Congratulations Phil.
Loved him on-air since I arrived at 2Day all those years ago – and one of the nicest caring people you could ever meet.

In the middle of the craziness of moving back from the UK Phil agreed to an interview with a pop-up AFTRS radio station, supporting us who want to get into this industry. A legend and a nice guy. Congratulations Phil!
