triple j’s Ben & Liam take aim at the quality of Aussie radio, including themselves

Former Assistant Editor

Ben and Liam‘s latest social media effort has definitely hit its mark.

The video, captioned simply ‘Listening to Australian radio,’ situates the duo in a car, flicking through Australian FM radio stations.

Highlights include an unnamed station which proclaims “Cash! Cash! Cash! Win some bloody cash! Right after 40 minutes of adds,” and a dig at Nova (and CHR in general) for playing “back to back Ed Sheeran.”

Frank Walker’s classic national tiles ad gets a brief flick, as well as a talkback segment about “smelly teenagers,” and of course, R&B Fridays.

Ben and Liam also tune into their Triple M alter-egos ‘Zipper and the Shit Stick‘, who quip “what’s more annoying than dropping your pie at the footy? Shopping with my wife!”

Liam then flicks across to ‘Breakfast with Ben & Liam’, to which the boys respond “Shut up, I hate those guys,” as they change the channel again.

The clip ends as they attempt to listen to AM radio: “Shortly on the program we’ll be talking to Mr Turnbull about tax reform, but now Leonard with some gardening tips.”

The clip has already seen 150K views and 7K likes since it was uploaded yesterday.

Ben and Liam air weekdays on triple j from 6am – 9am.

Scarily accurate.

However, as much as it is a piss take, it’s also a fair middle finger to the state of play of radio at the current time. This video does Triple J and all radio no favours at all.

Another classic example of the industry shooting itself in the foot.

Mocking commercial radio is an extremely tired premise but it was well executed.

@Anon Tired you say? The engagement for this piece on their socials would beg to differ.

It’s called comedy lighten up.
200,000 views that’s entertainment.
More of it.
