Tony Tardio: “I’ve been officially informed my 3AW role has been made redundant”
Legendary newsreader Tony Tardio says it’s been an honour being on Melbourne radio for 43 years, as his dispute with 3AW comes to a head.
Months after disappearing from the 3AW airwaves and lodging action in the Fair Work Commission, Tardio has now posted to X:
“I’ve been officially informed my role at 3AW has been made redundant.”
“Was it because I have been outspoken? It seems a very strange decision to me. Free speech is vital and I will continue to be brutally honest.”

In January, Tardio opened up to Radio Today about his 3AW absence – and the uproar it sparked among loyal listeners – saying he was deeply touched by the avalanche of support he’d received: “I am absolutely heartened that people have taken the trouble to post messages and set up a petition to get me back. It’s really humbling.”
At that time, the station rejected any suggestion Tardio had been sacked, telling Radio Today “As part of a change to newsroom operations his position was made redundant.”
It said it did not intend to comment further.
I am disgusted.. he was the best news reader on there! Going right off 3AW after many years of listening.
Jacqui Felgate should be the one to go. We have turned off when she comes on. So boring, constant topic is against the state government and not much else. Sooo boring…
It’s a shame he went full cooker. Not what a newsman should be.
