The radio duo serving up breakfast AND morning tea

From dropping prize-filled foam balls from helicopters to hunting fugitives with cash bounties on their heads, there are radio promotions designed to create maximum buzz.

And then there are those designed foster genuine connection.

Every Monday morning in Townsville, ARN’s Star 106.3 Breakfast show duo Adam Davison and Tom ‘Donny’ Watkin make a point of getting out of the studio, visiting a local workplace and handing out morning tea.

Called Workplace of the Week, It’s hardly a new thing. But it is a consistent thing. And as Star 106.3 Promotions Manager Jake Lacey tells Radio Today, the motto is as simple as the concept: Meet. Love. Listen.

“I’d love to say Workplace of the Week was my idea, but it’s been done a million times in radio,” says Jake.

“It’s pretty simple – get workplaces that listen to register, send the radio station out once a week, deliver free morning tea, shake hands, take a photo and thank them for listening.”

Jake says a lot of the time, these kinds of activations are left to the street team.

“But here in Townsville, we always try to elevate every promotion and make sure our talent are front and centre of it.”

“Adam and Donny could easily see this as just another Monday task that takes up an hour each week, but they genuinely see the value in getting out, connecting one-on-one with workplaces and meeting listeners – as well as potential new listeners.”

The activation is paying dividends. So far this year, Adam and Donny have visited 12 workplaces and connected with more than 100 listeners across Townsville.

And the benefits are twofold.

Star 106.3 Content Director Stu Tolan says “From a commercial point of view, it also creates great opportunities for clients to get directly in front of our audience.”

“For example, COS Workplace Supplies and Banjo’s have both come on board as partners for the promotion.”

Moral of the story? Sometimes in radio, the smallest gestures go the longest way.
