Territory FM 35 years On-Air

Staff Writer

Over the weekend Territory FM celebrated its 35th anniversary On-Air. The station marked the occasion by reverting back to their original name TOP FM and re-living some of the Territory’s biggest radio moments from the past 35 years.

“We were delighted to have been able to share some special moments with our audiences in Darwin”, said Acting station manager / Program Director Matt Bern.

The Territory’s first Chief Minister Paul Everingham launched the community station with a flick of a switch at 5pm on June 5 1981.

“It was a crazy, ramshackle ‘all-sorts’ station in the early days. It was the era of reel-to-reel magnetic analogue tapes and vinyl records. We used egg cartons on the wall to sound-proof the studio”, said Matt.

“1041 Territory FM was indebted to the hundreds of volunteers who had helped out over the years. They have provided the backbone of what has evolved into a high-quality community radio station.”

1041 Territory FM operates under a license held by Charles Darwin University.
