ABC Radio Canberra’s Ross Solly has delivered in a phenomenal result in Breakfast to knock Mix 106.3’s Kristen and Nige off their perch, in GfK Survey 1 for the nation’s capital.
Mix 106.3 increased its overall share as Canberra’s leading radio station among all people 10+ (up 0.6% to 22.8), continuing to dominate the local radio landscape, ahead of Hit 104.7.
ABC Canberra, however, made solid ground (up 1.3% to 13.1)

In Breakfast, Solly leapfrogged previous leaders Kristen and Nige (pictured above), moving up 4.7% to a share of 20.7, with a 10,000 increase in cume.
The Mix brekky duo now sit second (-1.6% to a 20.4 share).

I’m sure people who are more intimately familiar with the Canberra radio market will be able to make far more informed commentary than I’m able to.
However, based on what I heard during my visit in November last year (the output of all major stations has not changed significantly since then AFAIK) it’s not difficult to understand why Mix 106.3 rates so well during the daytime shifts. A reasonably Gold-esque, safe for workplace listening playlist with just the right amount of local chitchat. I rather miss WSFM here in Sydney being like that, but that’s me digressing again…
Aside from the duo being on-air in Canberra for years though, I don’t quite get the capital’s love of Kristen & Nige based on the snippets I heard! Maybe because they’re the best option of some pretty ordinary commercial brekky shows?
@SydneyCityTV While I agree with you on Mix’s music. It’s safe, familiar, and perfect for workplaces, which is a big part of why it rates well.
I do think Kristen & Nige are being seriously undersold by you here. They’re genuinely excellent at what they do. They understand Canberra, they sound like Canberra and they know how to talk to their audience in a way that feels natural, not forced.
And the idea that it’s just because they’ve been around a while doesn’t really stack up. The breakfast host on their sister station has been in the market in one way or another since 2011. That’s 15 years and no real runs on the board. Not to mention that HIT has been a mess for years.
Framing it as longevity does them a disservice given how well they’ve actually connected with the market.
