Steve Barker: “I’ll miss the camaraderie at 4BC”

Reporter

Anyone who’s worked in Breakfast radio knows it’s a demanding shift, and Steve Barker says there comes a time when your body just says ‘no’ to those dreaded 3.45am starts.

Now, the award-winning journalist can switch off the early alarm, resigning after almost three years as 4BC’s Breakfast newsreader.

Barker has worked for a host of stations, including 2GB, 2UE and Triple M.

He tells Radio Today that whilst he’s sorry to be leaving, he’s loved his time presenting Breakfast news and will miss the great camaraderie he shared with his 4BC colleagues.

Barker has won awards for his Sydney to Hobart yacht race coverage, received a letter from King Charles for his heartfelt coverage of Queen Elizabeth‘s death and was the only journalist (TV, radio, or press), who was on the inside of the mine when Brant Webb and Todd Russell exited Beaconsfield after two weeks underground.

As he told Radio Today last year, when it comes to news presentation, there’s a lot to be said for keeping things real.

“Every minute. Every day. SOUND LIKE YOU OWN IT. If you’re interesting – they’ll be interested!” he enthused.

Barker says he now looks forward to resuming his professional voiceover work full time.
