Aaron Chilcott celebrates 20 years in radio with new role at 3GG

No matter where we think our life is headed, sometimes the universe has other plans in store.

Just the other day, Aaron Chilcott – who recently departed his role as announcer and Operations Manager at ACE Radio – was driving into the car park of a job recruitment agency, ready to explore options for a new career … when his phone rang.

It turned out to be one of the best calls he’d had in ages.

As Aaron tells Radio Today “I was literally on the verge of making a complete career change when Capital Radio Network rang me to discuss a role within the company.”

That role turned out to be Afternoons announcer on Gippsland’s 531 3GG.

Next thing Aaron knew, the job was his. He starts later this month and, being a proud Gippsland boy through and through, it’s a perfect fit.

Having worked at various stations – including nine years with SCA as Program Manager and network announcer for Triple M Gippsland – Aaron’s new gig evokes a sense of childhood nostalgia.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for 3GG, as far back as primary school when I had a little keyring with a built-in AM radio,” he says.

“The only station it could pick up was 3GG, so I used to listen to it a bit!”

Reuniting with one of Gippsland’s most enduring Breakfast announcers in Andrew ‘Deaksy’ Deak is an added bonus.

“Knowing the great Deaksy over many years, and working in the same building as 3GG when I was with SCA, along with hearing plenty of big names in radio that have been on air there … I’m so thrilled to be given the opportunity to join the team,” says Aaron.

As he prepares to mark 20 years in full-time commercial radio, Aaron says he feels glad to able to celebrate the milestone with his new job at 3GG.

All up, nearly 13 of those years have been spent on radio in Gippsland.

“I love this region, my kids are growing up here, and I’m proud to call it home.”

Oh, and Aaron says having the Cheesecake Shop right next door to the 3GG studios in central Warragul will certainly come in handy.

You might even say it’s the icing on the cheesecake.

“My mouth is watering already!” laughs Aaron.

A rare instance of radio keeping one of the good ones.

One of radio’s genuinely nice blokes. Congrats Azdawg! Well deserved, you would have been a loss to the industry.
