A pioneer and a gentleman: RIP Graham McNeice
The radio industry is today mourning the loss of another big name in racing pioneer Graham McNeice, following his death at the age of 76.
Graham’s radio career began at the tender age of seventeen, calling greyhound races for Sydney’s 2KA.
For nearly a decade, McNeice was the understudy race caller to the legendary Des Hoysted and held down various commentary roles at 2UE.
It was here that Graham earned his iconic nickname ‘The Shadow,’ when fellow broadcaster Peter Bosley quipped on-air that his silhouette “cast a giant shadow over Canterbury racetrack.”
Born in Queensland, Graham carved out a memorable media career across both TV and radio as a race caller and commentator and was also one of Australia’s leading documentary makers.
While his dad had hoped he would follow the family tradition and join the butcher business, Graham’s heart was always in the excitement of the sporting world.
Graham played a key role in bringing satellite TV to Australia and was pivotal in the establishment of Sky Racing.
He is remembered among his colleagues as a gentleman and great friend.
A private funeral service will be held in the coming weeks.
I was a mate of Graham McNeice in 1961 when we were in the same class in First Year at Croydon Park Tech School. We played in the same football team.
I moved schools in 1962 and went to Belmore Boys. I saw Jim no more other than say 20 years ago when we crossed a street in Surry Hills at the same time – going in opposite directions. I would have loved a chat but he was with two other execs at the time.
I have one question – what was Graham’s date of birth. We are of course both 1948ers. I’m curious to see who was the youngest (or oldest hah!’
One thing I do remember very well was when we played at a park right next door to the Canterbury Racecourse, he was always peering over the fence to see what was going on.
