SCA promotes digital audio execs Grant Tothill & Chris Johnson

Staff Writer

Following the launch of its new LiSTNR app last week, broadcaster Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) has promoted Grant Tothill and Chris Johnson to new roles within the business.

Tothill is now general manager of digital audio, in addition to head of SCA Podcasting, while Johnson takes on the newly created head of digital and innovation role.

Johnson will continue to oversee the Digital Leadership Team and manage the roadmap of SCA’s core digital products including LiSTNR, according to a statement.

He will also now be responsible for establishing and managing SCA’s local and international digital partnerships, and will drive internal digital knowledge, collaboration and innovation to ensure SCA stays ahead of emerging trends and opportunities in the digital audio space.

Both executives report to SCA’s chief operating officer, John Kelly.

“The consumption of digital audio in Australia is growing rapidly and presents an exciting opportunity for SCA to capitalise on this emerging market and LiSTNR will be our new ‘home’ for SCA’s digital audio content,” Kelly said.

“Grant’s proven success in leading PodcastOne Australia from strength to strength gives me the absolute confidence that he will be exceptional in this new and enhanced role.

“We are very fortunate to have someone such as Chris with his level of skill and expertise in digital and we know that he will continue to excel in his new role.”

The new app play by SCA will house podcasts, radio streaming, digital stations, music and news offerings under one banner.

The launch effectively wraps up SCA’s PodcastOne Australia branding, with original SCA podcasts, such as Hamish & Andy, Just The Gist and The Briefing to now be branded as LiSTNR productions.

Its association with the US PodcastOne, however, continues and a selection of PodcastOne US titles will be available on LiSTNR and promoted on SCA’s media assets.

In addition, LiSTNR will expand SCA’s digital music offering, with 15 all-new linear music livestreaming channels “catering for a diverse array of moods and genres”.

Why didn’t they just stick with Podcast One, after spending so much to brand it. I preferred that name to ‘ LiSnR or whatever it is, sounds like ABC’s Listen and View App’s funny.
