RIP Richard Daniel. Radio industry pays tribute

Reporter

The radio industry is today mourning the loss of Richard Daniel, following his death just two weeks shy of his 66th birthday.

Richard – brother of Glenn and Terry Daniel – started his radio career at 8HA in 1977, later moving to a variety of stations in New South Wales, Canberra and Victoria.

Glenn – a renowned journalist and news presenter – passed away in 2021.

Terry – now the only surviving brother – is the owner of Australian Independent Radio News.

As young boys, the three brothers famously created their own station 2DD which operated from their childhood bedrooms.

In a Facebook post, his brother Terry said “It is with a sad but relieved heart that I share the news that my brother Richard passed away at 1:44am this morning in Nambour Selangor Hospital.

This all started back in 2021 with a melanoma on the back of his leg – in the last 6 to 8 months that moved to brain cancers and tumours and in the last 2 weeks they found 3 inoperable tumours deep in his brain.  Lesson here for all of us – if you suspect a spot or skin anomaly please get it checked.

Lots of plans to be made in the next few days – we will keep you all updated and thanks in advance for your thoughts and prayers. We know Richard is with God and at peace. He’s probably playing cricket already with my brother Glenn!”

In 1998, Richard and his wife Julie purchased two commercial stations 2BH and Hill FM in 1998.

In 2002 Richard joined the Christian International Shortwave Radio facility called Voice International which was owned by Christian Vision.

Richard was also an announcer at Salt FM on the Sunshine Coast.

In 2022, A special honour was bestowed upon the Daniel family at the Christian Media & Arts Australia Excellence in Media Awards, with all three brothers receiving the CMAA Legacy Award.

With a combined 129 years of radio experience between them, the award acknowledged the family’s incredible contribution to the industry.

A great brother & friend! Thank you Richard for being such an examplary teacher & leader. Your passion for media outreach has materialized; through the outreach training equip workshop you had in HaNoi, the Christian Media Teams in North Vietnam are sharing the Gospel more intentionally! May you find rest in the blossom of the Lord.
