Radio sleuths hot on the trail of the mystery 2UE caravan

Reporter

Radio sleuths have been hot on the trail, after yesterday’s Radioinfo story about the mystery 2UE live broadcast caravan, currently parked on Bryant Street in Rockdale Park, Sydney.

The local council has slapped a sticker on the caravan, warning that if it isn’t moved it, will be towed, and sold at auction.

But who owns it?

Having read the Radioinfo story, Grahame Hannell got in touch. He says it looks very much like the original mobile studio originally owned by 2WS when the station was based in Seven Hills.

Grahame worked at 2WS from 1978 to 1992 and observed a number of clients holding events during his tenure, with the studio occasionally on site at their venues.

Grahame remembers it being taken to Bathurst every year for an OB for the Bathurst 1000.

“I believe it may have been sold to a guy contracted to 2UE to do outside broadcast. Unfortunately his name escapes me. It could have been the mobile studio used by 2UE each year broadcasting from the Royal Easter Show,” he says.

After leaving 2WS, Grahame joined 2UE from 1992 to 2008, but says he never had a client book an OB to use the mobile studio.

He’s given us some handy leads to follow, but whoever the caravan belongs to, Grahame would hate to see it disappear for good.

We’ll keep you posted!

Sure looks like the old WS van, but I’d like to see inside to confirm. Good times at the Bathurst 1000 with Grahame!
