Staff Writer

Welcome to the seventh GfK metro radio survey of 2018.

Stay tuned to this page from 9:30am, when we will reveal all the #1s and GfK ratings cards.

Radio Today will also bring you the big talking points, headlines, and top takeaways from each metro market; Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth – as the results come to hand.

Our rolling ratings coverage continues throughout the day, with DAB+ ratings and The Spin, as well as the latest results of The Mother of All Radio Battles between SCA’s 2DayFM Sydney and ARN’s KIIS FM Melbourne.

In the following days, we’ll be diving into the data and figures for each market to provide in-depth insight and analysis, as well as analysing the cume numbers that often get overlooked.

Survey #7 for 2018 was conducted by GfK for Commercial Radio Australia between Sunday, September 30 to Saturday, November 3.

SYDNEY:

  • Smoothfm is now the #1 FM station in Sydney with a share of listening of 8.8% (-0.5) among People 10+, knocking off WSFM on 8.2% (-1.8).
  • Kyle and Jackie O have increased their Breakfast audience further, remaining the only FM show in the daypart in double digits.
  • A big result for ABC on AM Drive as Richard Glover nabs top spot from 2GB’s Ben Fordham, with just 0.1% separating the two.
  • 2DayFM will celebrate some promising results, up to 5.5% overall (+1.2), while Grant Denyer & Ed Kavalee (with Ash London) rise to 4.6% (+1.0) on Breakfast, but remain behind triple j’s Ben & Liam on a 5% share (+0.7).
  • Kate, Tim & Marty still #1 on Drive but Will & Woody see a healthy increase to 8.4% (+1.5).

MELBOURNE:

  • ARN’s Christian O’Connell finally sees some positive results, with his Breakfast show rising above both Nova and Triple M to 7.9% (+1.2) – the biggest FM share increase this book.
  • Smoothfm retains top spot overall on FM, with Fox FM and Gold nipping at its heels.
  • Fox FM remains Breakfast’s most consistent performer on Breakfast (undefeated in 2018), with Fifi, Fev & Byron holding the #1 position on 9% despite falling for the second consecutive book.
  • Very little movement on the AM band, with 3AW dominant overall, as well as on Breakfast and Drive.
  • Dayparts on Triple M saw some positive uplift, gaining +1.5 in Mornings and +2.0 in Afternoons. However, Nova’s much-hyped format shift to a greatest hits workday is now #5 FM in Melbourne and #5 FM on Afternoons and #4 FM on Mornings Sydney.

  • As Radio Today predicted, 97.3FM has fallen even further away from the contest at the top, even dropping to single digits.
  • SCA will have plenty to crow about today, with Hughesy & Kate seeing a big swing their way on Drive, and the duo now has a 14.2% share (+1.7).
  • Nova’s Kate, Tim & Marty dropped from #1 in Brisbane for the first time this year.

Kiis 101.1 Melbourne morns and avos looking like a threat to other FM stations. Watch this space. Building, but it looks like their breakfast show isn’t leading the way.

I’m consistently puzzled by Melbourne results. So inconsistent. It’s not reflective of the sounds of the stations though.

Sydney – well, what’s G bomb doing about 2day workday?

I said it last year, I’ll say it again. Triple M’s little Robin experiment has clearly failed, this survey, like all of this year’s survey’s are an anomaly. Bianca Dye is the woman Brisbane loves. Half of Brisbane listen every day.

What will ARN do with KIIS Melbourne….? Breakfast has pretty much been down every survey since they changed teams….

Lots of marketing poured into KIIS Melbourne breakfast show without any results. At least Gold is showing promise for ARN – duncan may have got one right

Terrible day this week for ARN Brisbane. The Triple M brekky with Robin, Marto and Mooney is one of the best around.

I’m sorry to see Jase n PJ not getting an upturn in survey results because I’ve been listening to that show and it is a great show! The station sounds good too. It is just a cut throat market.

PJ (no, not THE PJ from Jase and PJ)

A swapsy needs to be done. Kiis 101.1 Melbourne should put J and PJ into drive. They have potential. Breaky drives any station but in this case the station is doing better than breakfast show. I mean, has anyone seen kiis night figures? They’re exceeding the Fox!
