Paul Turton signs off from ABC NSW Mornings
After more than 40 years on air, ABC Newcastle and NSW Mornings presenter Paul Turton delivered his last show today.
Paul began his radio career as a teenager in commercial radio in Canberra before joining ABC in Newcastle in 1989. He’s hosted Breakfast, Drive, Mornings and statewide programs becoming region’s most respected broadcasters covering natural disasters and community campaigns to elections, industry change and moments of celebration.
Paul said:
“I have been fortunate enough to do a job I love surrounded by people I respect and admire. My work has been important to me, but the time has come to try and catch up on some of the sports carnivals and dance recitals I have missed in the past.
I refuse to use the word ‘retirement’ because it implies a sense of slowing down. What I will be doing is channelling my energies in a different direction and putting my family first … while still travelling at approximately 100mph. To those who have tolerated me on the radio over the years I offer my sincere thanks. If I have managed to brighten your day in some small way it is mission accomplished!”
Lucia Hill, Editor ABC Newcastle, Central Coast and Upper Hunter, said:
“I have had the enormous privilege and pleasure of working with Paul Turton over the last 30 years and have learnt so much from him.
A talented and incredibly creative broadcaster, he has informed and entertained local and state audiences in a career spanning more than four decades.
His deep passion for and knowledge of music is unparalleled. So too is his razor-sharp wit and ability to cover the most complex and complicated issues in a way that makes them palatable and relatable.
Intelligent, funny, genuine and brave, Paul will leave a big void at ABC Newcastle, where he’s an admired, respected colleague and friend to so many.
I wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement.”
New programming arrangements will be announced in coming weeks. You can listen to Paul’s last show here.
