‘Albo’ the new Communications Boss

Staff Writer

Following the leadership spill in the Federal Labor Party last week, and the subsequent resignation of Stephen Conroy, Australia has a new Communications Minister, Anthony Albanese.

Whilst the NBN rollout will undoubtedly be high on Albanese's agenda to steer, the recent Labor party media reforms which failed to make it through parliament, will presumably be revisited.

Albanese, who is also the Deputy Leader of the Labor Party, has been given the portfolio of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, in addition to his Infrastructure and Transport portfolio.

It's a big group of responsibilities, and perhaps indicates that reform in the media sector is not expected to be a major focus of the Rudd government.

Albanese may be the Communications Minister for now, however with an election within a couple of months, it remains to be seen whether it will be him or Malcolm Turnbull speaking at the ACRA's this year in the role.

Yesterday, at the end of ABC's Insiders, they played a funny clip of Albo interviewing himself while waiting to talk to Sabra Lane on ABC Radio.
