“More than just a broadcaster.” RIP Brian Wilshire
Veteran 2GB presenter Brian Wilshire is being remembered as one of radio’s true gentlemen, following news of his death at the age of 81.
Brian began his career in radio in 1969 at 2NZ in Inverell, before moving to 2TM Tamworth then 2CA Canberra.
In 1974 he relocated to Sydney as a newsreader at 2UE.
In 1979, Brian took over the 2GB Weeknight program from the late John Pearce.
For 36 years he rated #1 in that timeslot.
In 1981, he pioneered the ‘Midnight Matchmaker,’ and also created the ‘Instant Drama’ show, where callers improvised dramatic scenes, a format that would later evolve into Theatre Sports.
Former 2GB Program Manager Pete Graham was among many in the radio industry to pay tribute via social media:
“One memory that’s stayed with me all these years was flying down to Melbourne to have a custom jingle package made for him — lines like “When you’re there on your own … Brian Wilshire on Open Line” still ring in my ears. It was crafted to match the warmth, curiosity, and unmistakable presence he brought to late-night radio.”
“Brian was more than a broadcaster — he was a companion to countless listeners through the quiet hours, a sharp mind, and a generous colleague. His legacy will echo through the industry for a long time.”
“Rest easy, Brian. And thanks for the nights.”
Brian owned nights on 2GB….his share was through the roof, RIP mate.
I met Brian, his wife and daughter 1996 RPA Hospital. Mum swore by him on sleepless nights. A good man, informative and Australian to the core. I.m pretty sure he lived around Kurrajong.
