Meshel Laurie returns to radio on Wollongong’s Wave FM

Former Editor & Content Director

Meshel Laurie is making a return to radio, this time on Grant Broadcasters’ Wollongong station, Wave FM.

You can listen to the talk break below.

Laurie has been on and off the airwaves for the past two decades, including as part of Nova’s Drive show Meshel, Tim & Marty, alongside Tim Blackwell and Marty Sheargold.

She was replaced by Kate Ritchie on the Drive show when she joined Tommy Little to host the Meshel & Tommy Breakfast show in Melbourne.

In 2015, Laurie left Nova to join KIIS to host Matt & Meshel with Matt Tilley. Matt & Meshel was not renewed by Australian Radio Network (ARN) at the tail end of 2017, with the program replaced by Jase & PJ.

Laurie has previously spoken out about her treatment by various media outlets, including saying she was treated “like a disposable dishrag and a fool” by Nova.

Now, she will be filling in for Jade Papesch who is taking maternity leave from Wave FM.

Laurie is thrilled with the move.

“Jade’s about to have a baby and I am not. I couldn’t be happier for both of us,” she quipped. “I’m also thrilled to be keeping her seat warm for the next couple of months. Talk about shaking off the 2020 blues.”

Papesch added: “I’m so excited to see Meshel Laurie make her radio comeback and couldn’t think of a better sub to pull off the bench and entertain the Illawarra each morning.”

Wave FM’s content director, Dean Kesby, is confident Laurie will fill the void perfectly – “there’s only one woman in Australian radio who could keep Damien and Straney’s mischief under control”, he said.

Wake Up With Jade, Straney & Damien is co-hosted by former Australian Idol winner Damien Leith and Adam Straney.

They don’t pay $2 million a year in Wollongong like they do at Nova

Still?

Imaging having someone as great as Meshel Laurie and the PD refers to the role as keeping the boys mischief under control.

EXCELLENT point, “still?”. Mishel is far too talented and too long in the game to be sold as a wrangler of some regional radio jocks.

Yay! I’ve ALWAYS wanted to be Meschel Lawrie when I grow! So good hearing her on the airwaves again

If Dave Hughes gets $2 million a year then Meshel Laurie should get equal pay

It is so sad that there is so much sexism in radio

Keep em under control? Have you listened lately, keep em in the storage closet and let her go it alone.

ARN sacked her, so did Nova.

Great talent

A great broadcaster… Wollongong is very lucky and probably spoilt. Will be a good weapon against i98 if Meshel is left to lead and drive the show! The other two are best to support and let her go… don’t try to match her or fight for airtime. Meshel V Marty… good battle in 2021.

Regional? These days, for good or bad , Wollongong is pretty much part of South Sydney with over 30 thousand driving the M1 to work each day a local population of over 300 thousand and plenty of people looking to live there.. When I hear Regional I think Bega.

Still regional tho. Population of 300-400 people? Not in the same field as Metro.
