Marty Sheargold to depart Nova’s Kate, Tim & Marty drive show

Aussie radio legend and comedian Marty Sheargold.

Marty Sheargold is leaving the Nova Network, Radio Today can reveal.

The comedian confirmed his plans to retire from the top-rating Kate, Tim & Marty drive show just after 5pm AEST on Friday (July 24). Sheargold has called NOVA Entertainment home for a decade.

“Kate, Tim and Marty will no longer feature Marty at the end of the day,” Sheargold said. “Thank you to the network for having me, putting up with me.

“Over the last four or five months I’ve been tossing up what I’d like to do in 2021, and what I’ve decided to do is leave the show,” Sheargold explained to his on-air partners.

Kate, Tim & Marty have proven a fan favourite with metropolitan listeners around the country and in the most recent GfK survey were the #1 FM drive show in all metro markets.

It’s the program’s biggest shake-up since Kate Ritchie replaced Meshel Laurie in 2014.

“I’ve had a fantastic 10 years with the Nova Network, having worked with buildings full of talented and dynamic people,” Sheargold said in a statement.

“I’d like to thank Tim and Kate for their support of my decision and wish them continued success with the show. Now feels like the right time for me professionally to keep challenging myself and to embrace future opportunities with renewed vigour and enthusiasm.”

Sheargold’s next move is unknown, however, there is plenty of industry speculation about a podcast and more stand-up comedy after he announced his return to stages last year.

Sheargold joined Nova 106.9 Brisbane in 2010, replacing Ash Bradnam on breakfast. A year later he relocated to Melbourne to replace Fitzy & Wippa on drive, with Laurie and Tim Blackwell.

His last show will be September 11, with the network’s programming and marketing chief Paul Jackson planning to unveil a new co-host to join Blackwell and Ritchie “in the coming weeks”.

“Marty has had a fantastic 10-year career with Nova, initially in Brisbane breakfast and then as part of the iconic Kate, Tim & Marty drive show,” Jackson said.

“We would like to thank him for his contribution to the network, the laughs and great radio moments, and wish him well for the future.”

Kate, Tim & Marty have won seven commercial radio awards, including Best Networked Program and Best Syndicated Program at last year’s ACRAs in Brisbane.

End of a great run! All the best, Shiggsy!
Can Kate and Tim re brand with a new third? Marty is irreplaceable. What are the chances of Kate and Tim heading to breakfast and Fitzy and Wippa moving to drive in 2021?

I don’t think this is a great loss for the station. Nova should just play the Hot 30 in that timeslot and they would be number one and save themselves a lot of money.

Shocked!

Wow! It’s hard to imagine drive on Nova without Shiggsy!!
Wonder if he will show up at another network or if the podcast and standup thing is legit

Bet you a roast dinner he lands at Podcast One!

They already have Hamish and Andy, Tom Tilley, Matt and Alex and now Marty Sheargold.

I reckon he will pop up at another radio network. You’d be nuts in this climate to quit radio for Stand up. Podcasting wouldn’t give you a huge income either.

It’s all ova for Nova! That show is the only thing that’s been good on this network for a long time. Everything else is a rip off from the UK. Brisbane has had its 2 worst surveys since they got rid of their PD and MD and is now an exact clone of Sydney which hasn’t done well in a long time. Another example of great people being let go

Good on Marty. Great call. Very good time to make a move while things get really tough at Nova. It’s not the same place as it was.

I smell a rat! I’m gonna quit this very highly paid, easy as gig in radio and focus on stand up in the middle of a health crisis lockdown, where at best I can do my stick to a room of under 40 people. Seems legit.
The old Marty that got the punt from MMM come out to play?
Or
MMM Melbourne breakfast next year in an attempt to save Eddy?

Won’t listen to one of my favourite radio programs again. While you can’t replace Mardy stop trying to bring equality into it…. use common sense and bring someone that has experience in radio. Stop trying to please the minority and causing divisions , that’s the worlds problem…. hire Hamish or Andy real humour for true Australian’s.

Have given the new show a go and just can’t stand the new guy. His voice just grinds on my nerves and would rather drive in silence. Really missing Kate tim and Marty. Bad call on the new guy nova.
