Look Who’s Making it in Radio: Matthew Lipiarski

At 21, Matthew ‘Lippi’ Lipiarski (pictured left) got a job with ACE Radio in Hamilton to learn programming. The job started a snowball effect that later resulted in becoming a Music Director, a Brekky host, and also, a Content Director, which earned a spot as a Radio Today 30 Under 30 winner.

Lippi admits the best lesson he learnt since starting was how much listeners depend on the radio, and how rewarding it can be to play a part in that.

“One thing I would say, especially working in regional, is how the community really can rely on us for day-to-day news, what’s happening in the area, emergency information etc. Coming in at 21, I probably didn’t fully understand that until I settled in more,” Lippi said.

“So, I would say I don’t underestimate or take for granted what we do.”

“We have the ability to connect with people every day! Whether they are a part of the show or just listening. If they’re feeling down, we have the power to make them feel better. If they have some things going on in their life, we can provide a place for them to forget about it even just for a few minutes. Or we can just be a friendly voice for them to listen to.”

“I love the impact we can have on someone; I think it’s pretty cool.”

One-half of the Jimmy and Lippi Brekky show on Colac’s Mixx 106.3FM in regional western Victoria, Matt tries to take the show to the listeners as much as possible, which has created many fun opportunities.

“We’ve delivered brekky to listeners and given them lifts to work to promote a new car, we’ve done the show on a treadmill, we hopped into bed together on the main street all in the name of charity,” Lippi said.

“Just the other week we rode a tandem bike and visited every local school for national ride to school day.”

But the main objective is genuinely connecting with locals, for locals.

“Mixx Brekky is a super local show that features many voices from across the area, such as local politicians, council, sporting figures, and police, and we can’t forget our listeners too, who are always fun to chat to,” Lippi said.

“We try to involve the community as much as possible, a couple of things that come to mind are that we cross to our local coastal towns for updates regularly, and each Wednesday we get a student into the studio to co-host the show with us.”

“We love our show and love that we are able to connect with our listeners every day in whatever capacity that may be…we are open to all ideas.”

The team at Mixx 106.3 are a tight-knit crew that prioritise high-quality radio and a good laugh.

“The Monday Morning Tea weekend debrief is always a highlight ha-ha, but seriously…”

“The team take pride and really care about our product and what we do. Everyone chips in with ideas for what we could do on air, and we all work towards the same goal of creating really engaging local radio! We have plenty of fun along the way too.”

Matt’s advice for people considering working at Mixx 106.3 is “Enjoy it, embrace it, and make the most of the opportunities presented to you.”

“There’s a real community feel here, lot’s of support and great people across the district!”

Jimmy and Lippi’s Mixx Brekky can be heard weekdays on 106.3FM from 6am or streamed here.
