Life after radio: Helping industry professionals find a way forward

Reporter

Traditional media is facing uncertain times, but help is at hand for radio professionals who are seeing seismic changes in the industry, and wondering whether they’ll still have a job in six months.

Andy Maher, former radio announcer/VO/audio engineer in Australian and Canadian radio and AFTRS graduate, has launched a new podcast called Off Mic: Life After Radio.

The podcast features interviews with fellow former radio aces who are now thriving in other careers, highlighting the transferable skills that experienced radio people possess, as well as sharing some fun stories.

Andy says “I want this podcast and the stories we tell to be a light in the fog for people who don’t know where to go.”

In his own radio days, Andy worked full-time at Triple M Sydney and at NewCap Radio in Calgary, Canada.

He also freelanced at ARN, Southern Cross Austereo, Nova, 2GB, Fairfax Radio, SBS Radio and numerous other media organisations.

Thesedays, he mainly provides editing, mixing and guidance to fellow podcasters.

Kicking off the series with two consecutive episodes, the first guests are an announcer turned best-selling author and a program director turned marketing executive.

As podcast guest Stephen Walter-Gerrard discovered, “All of the skills that I’d spent twenty years developing were all directly transferable”.

New episodes of the podcast will be released every second Thursday.

Off Mic: Life After Radio is available on all major podcast platforms, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts, plus as a full video version on YouTube.

Is this the same Andy Maher as the guy on The Front Bar with Molloy and Pang? If not, what a crazy coincidence!
