Jam-packed program as Spotify House gets underway

Spotify House has kicked off in Sydney with a jam-packed day which detailed the changing nature of discovery, what artists really need to know to get playlisted, and the up-and-coming artists that people across the world should be listening to.

Sulinna Ong, Spotify’s Global Head of Editorial, revealed who has made it onto her personal playlist.

In the day’s first session, A&R Spotlight with Eva Trifonas, 88rising, Trifonas had an exclusive fireside chat with Kossy Ng, Head of Music, SEA at Spotify.

Commenting on what the next generation will bring to the A&R (artists and repertoire) role, Trifonas said “I think what really stands out is that a good song’s a good song. It’s undeniable. You can have a soundbite that goes viral, but consumers really want to hear ‘the one,’ they want to hear the song and connect with it.”

“So I think now, A&Rs will hear that, and everything else will come along, but it’s going to be about the quality of music. That’s my opinion on it. The future is bright.”

Later in the day, the In Conversation with Sulinna Ong session, moderated by Alicia Vrajlal, Editorial & Partnerships Lead at Missing Perspectives, allowed attendees to get an insight into one of the world’s sharpest music editorial minds.

On how music is being discovered, curated and exported globally, Ong said “Spotify has always embraced the best of human cultural knowledge with the best of technology. And that’s how we approach it. It’s important for us to have experts in local markets – the marriage between that global scale and local knowledge is what enables us to help music travel across markets around the world.”
