In training: ABC Radio’s Sammy J to embark on 24 hour Radiothon
Sammy J is hoping like mad that four years of doing Breakfast radio has equipped him with the necessary training for the challenge he’s about to take on.
Next week, the ABC Radio Melbourne host will embark on a 24 hour Radiothon.
It’s all part of ABC Gives, the national broadcaster’s annual charity appeal, in which each state picks its own charity partner to raise funds for a good cause.
“In Melbourne we are supporting SecondBite, an amazing charity that saves food from waste and delivers it to people facing hunger and food insecurity,” Sammy tells Radio Today.
Sammy admits he first suggested the Radiothon idea as a joke.
“I’m as surprised as everyone else to discover it’s actually happening.”
“Basically, I’m going to turn up at 5pm on Wednesday November 29 and co-host the remainder of Ali Moore’s Drive show, then continue on as co-host of all the other regular programs.”
After eleven and a half hours, Sammy will also host his own Breakfast show at 5.30am.
“Along the way I’ll be updating listeners on how much money we’ve raised, taking on any dares or challenges that are presented, and trying not to ruin everyone else’s shows.”
But Sammy J won’t just be relying on his lived experience of keeping strange working hours to keep him awake.
“I’ll also have a coffee schedule and, I hope, some friendly colleagues willing to pop down the servo and grab me some jelly snakes on request (cut to ‘Jelly Snake Budget Blow Out’ featuring at the next ABC Senate Estimates hearing).”
Listeners can support their local community by donating to their state’s chosen charity.
“Obviously with the cost-of-living crisis a lot of people are struggling, and although we recognise many people aren’t in a position to donate, for those who can, these charities along with SecondBite are very efficient way of making sure your money is going directly to those in need.”
All funds raised will go straight to charity partners in each state and territory.
