“I’m bored sh*tless.” Marty Sheargold’s stand-up comedy return

Reporter

Marty Sheargold is bored. Bored shitless, in fact.

And so, seven months after parting ways with Triple M, he’s getting ready to re-launch himself on the national stand-up comedy circuit.

Sheargold’s Red Card Tour is fittingly named, given it was his disparaging remarks about The Matildas which ultimately brought down the curtain on his high-profile radio gig.

He was also roundly criticised for declaring that endometriosis was a ‘made up’ disease, drawing the ire of advocates including former triple j host Bridget Hustwaite.

Now, it would appear Sheargold has had enough of his impromptu vacation.

As much as I’ve been trying to embrace early retirement – I’m bored shitless, so I’m going to be the 54 year-old man that I am,” Sheargold says on his website.

“Fun, sexy, charming and humble. Let’s share moments and memories from my life.”

The blurb goes on to say that Sheargold remains a force in Australian comedy, with his latest stand-up routine taking aim at everything from ‘modern madness’ to middle-age.

Last week, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found The Marty Sheargold Show breached decency rules, censuring SCA’s Triple M outlets in Sydney, Brisbane, Maryborough and on the Gold Coast for broadcasting what it said were Sheargold’s degrading comments in February.

Authority Member Carolyn Lidgerwood said the language used went beyond generally acceptable standards of decency.

“Sexist comments like this don’t belong in Australian broadcasting. Even if the comments were an extremely ill-judged attempt at humour, a reasonable listener would have found them offensive and to have crossed the line.”

According to the regulator, about 100 people contacted the ACMA in February to complain about Sheargold’s on-air remarks.

At the time of his SCA departure, Sheargold said “Having mutually agreed to part ways with the Triple M Network, I fully understand the gravity of my comments. I’d like to sincerely apologise to the Matildas and the broader organisation.”

Whilst the ACMA says it is now considering potential ‘enforcement action’ against Southern Cross Austereo, it is yet to reveal what kind of penalties could be handed down.

One wonders how much of all this will become material for the Red Card Tour and just how far Sheargold will push the envelope this time.

@Tim
It’s literally her job to make news pieces about people who work/worked in radio/media!

Puff pieces generally don’t cite ACMA breaches, Tim.

Can we get an update on every other person that has left radio over the past year?

@Pete: Unless I’m completely mistaken, this site as well as its sister RadioInfo has published articles on what a number of various other ex-radio people have moved onto over the past year.

Which certainly isn’t to say that I’m a fan of Marty Sheargold (far from it) but I think someone who’s previously done metropolitan breakfast and national drive shows is almost inevitably going to generate more media coverage than those who’ve mainly presented in small, two commercial station regional markets.
