i98FM’s Cam Hilder departs radio for new adventures

i98FM‘s workdays announcer Cam Hilder is leaving radio to head back to his home town of Trangie NSW, his family and truck driving.

Cam recently won an ACRA for Best Music Host (Provincial) and has been with i98FM three and a half years. He’s also worked for SCA and NOVA after finishing his Graduate Diploma in Radio and Podcasting with AFTRS in 2019.

Cam said:

“I’m very grateful for my time in radio and for the wonderful people who backed me along the way. After giving it a lot of thought, it feels like the right time for me to move along and do something completely different, and am lucky that in the modern radio industry I can genuinely say I’m going to ‘explore other opportunities’!”

Hoping we’ll see Cam back through radio’s doors again. You can apply for Cam’s role with the community focused and hard working team at Wollongong’s i98 here.

You know the modern radio industry is in bad shape when an ACRA-winning announcer would rather be a truck driver.

All the best for what’s next Cam! You’re a star in my eyes! 🙂

A sad indictment indeed. The truck driver salary is most likely close to, or north of 6 figures.
Given the cost of living crisis, paying someone 50-60k in a town like the ‘gong isn’t going to cut it, unless you’re living with 3 other people, or at home with the parents.
(I have no idea what the salary at i98 actually is, just a guess)
I fear the dream is dying for a lot of people.

Cam is such a great presenter! Sending him love and light and a huge horn honk for the trucking adventures! x

@Justin

I agree with you that the radio dream is dying for many people. I am one of those people. I’m considering giving up on entering the industry if I can’t get a job at TRFM. I’ve waited so long, created 61 podcast episodes since May 2023 AND have presented, produced and edited national community radio shows just for someone wo doesn’t know the market to get an internal promotion. It really is sad and I don’t know what to do.
