Hugh Marks appointed Managing Director of the ABC

Reporter

Former Nine Entertainment Chief Executive Hugh Marks has been appointed as the new Managing Director of the ABC.

Marks replaces David Anderson, who announced in August he would be stepping down from the role.

ABC Chair Kim Williams says “Hugh is an unusually good fit for the ABC, having experience with the only organisation comparable in range and depth to the ABC.”

Marks has flagged the need for the ABC to focus on excellence and make choices about its priorities, in order to maintain the quality of its news and programs.

His appointment comes as the ABC navigates the digital transformation of the broadcasting sector.

Why, why, why are the ABC feeling the need to hire executives from commercial radio/media backgrounds? It’s like they’re overhauling themselves! Just look at the Hard Quiz re-runs before the news every night… very commercial (and annoying) if you ask me!

KK, because their ratings are in the toilet across TV and radio. Yes, ratings shouldn’t be the overall objective, but they clearly need to justify their existence and do a better job. Johnathan Shire was ahead of his time.
