First time ever: WSFM now Sydney’s #1 station overall
It’s a truly historic day for Sydney’s WSFM, now the city’s #1 station overall for the first time ever, achieving its best share result in 6 years in GfK Survey 7.
Jonesy & Amanda achieved their strongest result in 10 years, now Sydney’s #2FM Breakfast show with 11.3% share (+0.7%)
Amanda said “We are on the cusp of our 20th year together at WSFM and this amazing result is giant shot in the arm.”
In congratulating the WSFM team, ARN’s Chief Content Officer Duncan Campbell said “This milestone reflects the dedication, passion, and exceptional talent that drives the entire team – from Jonesy & Amanda to Ugly Phil and Steve Fitton, who have both achieved #1 in their timeslots with their unbeatable daytime presence, along with the entire crew behind the scenes.”
WSFM Content Director Mike Byrne said “I couldn’t be prouder of the entire team who have worked so hard to craft a radio station that resonates with Sydney.”
“Today’s results reflect that hard work.”
ARN now boasts a duopoly in Sydney Breakfast, with KIIS 1065’s Kyle & Jackie O Show and WSFM’s Jonesy & Amanda the #1 and #2FM Breakfast Shows respectively.
I’m certainly not disputing that today’s result is an historic one for WSFM (especially with Ugly Phil – along with Ty Frost on Smooth – knocking Ray Hadley off #1 spot), but how does this figure compare to their results from the 1990s?
Granted, that 2UE and 2DayFM were at the peak of their powers back then…and it’s also before the days 96.9 and 95.3 were fulltime commercial stations. But I was under the impression that 2WS-FM 101.7 (as they were known as back then) enjoyed a considerable amount of success back in the ’90s with its “The Best Songs of All Time” format of the time and Hans & Kayley, Pete Graham, etc.
Anyway…let’s hope Jonesy & Amanda can manage to beat Ben Fordham and Kyle & Jackie O before too long. Not that J&A’s Survey #7 share of 11.3% isn’t good, but at times this observer can’t help but feel they deserve to be #1 in the Sydney radio ratings.
