Entries for The Quills now open

Staff Writer

The ACRAs are behind us and now it’s time for the Quills; the Melbourne Press Club awards that recognise excellence in Victorian journalism.

They were founded in 1995 with ten awards, and this year the Quills will celebrate the best work in 29 categories across a range of platforms and reporting areas.

There are two radio specific categories; Radio News and Radio Current Affairs. However, there are other categories that may be applicable including Podcasting and the Harry Gordon Australian Sports Journalist of the Year.

Former Triple M Melbourne breakfast newsreader Seb Costello was the 2016 winner of the Radio News Category for his coverage of Usain Bolt’s gold medal winning performance in the 100ms at the Rio Olympics.

He was also a finalist in the Current Affairs category for his coverage of the Muhammad Ali funeral. This Quill was won by Richard Barker and Michael Bachelard from The Age for “Phoebe’s Fall”.

The entry criteria are simple. Entrants must be employed by a media organisation based in Victoria or conducts substantial publishing or broadcasting activities in Victoria.

They must work primarily in Victoria or have been sent from Victoria on an interstate or overseas assignment for a Victoria media organisation.

Entries for the 2017 Quill Awards must have been published or broadcast between January 1 and December 31 2017.

Entries must be submitted via the website by 5pm February 1, 2018. And unlike the ACRAs, there’s no time restrictions on entries!
