Duncan Campbell on ARN’s historic day

If you haven't yet seen the results and analysis from Survey 2, see it all here.

You can also see the press releases and the ups and downs.

During the day I caught up with Duncan Campbell, National Content Director for the Australian Radio Network (ARN), who run KIIS / Mix / Classic Hits.

Mark: ARN have the number 1 FM station in all markets you're in. You'd be happy with that start to 2014?

Duncan: These days don't get much better really and they don't happen all the time so you have to take the time to enjoy it and congratulate the teams that have been involved in executing the strategy at a station level.

It's the first time we've been number 1 FM in all the markets we operate in, ever ! Demographically our target has always been 25-54 and we're number 1 in that too in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide and that's the first time that's happened. From a company perspective it's a historic day for us and hugely positive around the country.

Mark: A lot of the focus has been on KIIS but that's not the only story – the result for Gold in Melbourne, the strength of 97.3 Brisbane and Mix Adelaide – there a good stories in all 4 markets.

Duncan: Kyle and Jackie O were the tipping point for us as a company and that's another great result for those guys today. That has validated the move for us and them and to see the increases we've seen in Sydney is impressive.

Gold in Melbourne has been a work in progress for the last couple of years. I've always said that station deserves better ratings than what it has been getting and today is a great day for the team there to be number 1 FM in Melbourne. Also to see Mix breakfast finally move forward and the station inch forward too is positive.

As a network we still have a lot of work to do. We want to see Gold consolidate its position, Mix to continue moving forward and for KIIS and WSFM to be #1 and #2 FM in Sydney so we're launching a big marketing campaign for WSFM this Sunday (Pure Gold). I'd like to sit back and freeze time today but we have to keep moving things forward.

Mark: 97.3 in Brisbane dropped a bit but held onto the number 1 spot, 0.2 in front of Nova. But you lost number 1 at breakfast to Nova with ABC also jumping ahead to be 2nd with 97.3 now 3rd.

Duncan: We're working very hard at breakfast there to increase the fun element into Robin, Terry and Bob. Brisbane is very competitive between us and Nova and that will continue for the rest of the year. It's nice for us to kick the year off with a couple of #1's, let's just hope that continues.

Mark: Finally to Adelaide and Mix 102.3 are back to number 1 and for Cruise 1323 to be above SAFM, a great duopoly result.

Duncan: Over the last year, Cruise has ebbed ahead of SAFM a couple of times but this is the first time this year. 4KQ and Cruise both perform well for AM music stations. It's a very small team of people down at Cruise and they work very hard. It's a bloody great result for them today.
