“There definitely have been days this year when I haven’t been OK”: Ben & Liam’s R U OK? Day confession

Staff Writer

triple j breakfast team Ben & Liam are not ones to shy away from hard times. That was exemplified in an on-air segment with the pair opening up about their mental health as part of R U OK? Day.

In light of the sustained sledging they’ve faced since taking over the national brekkie show from Matt Okine and Alex Dyson, Ben & Liam were candid in voicing their struggles.

“There definitely have been days this year when I haven’t been OK, and the answer to the question ‘R U OK?’ would have been ‘No’,” Liam admitted, speaking of the “relentless” abuse they have copped.

“There is sometimes a fresh can of hate that you’ve got to open up every day, and it definitely wears you down,” he added. “I can honestly say I’ve had nights where I’ve cried myself to sleep because of stuff like that.”

The conversation continued with Liam revealing the extent of hurtful comments he has received from people, with the more extreme examples “telling me to take my own life.”

While Ben was quick to back up his co-host’s admissions, support from listeners flowed in on triple j’s social media pages, grateful to the boys for their honesty and the decision to get behind a worthy initiative.
