Christian O’Connell celebrates 500 shows in Oz by throwing back to his first radio gig

Staff Writer

The Christian O’Connell show has reached 500 shows in Australia across Australian Radio Network’s (ARN) GOLD 104.3.

O’Connell opened the show this morning thanking sidekicks Jack Post and ‘Pats’ (Patrina Jones).

“Do you know what? There was a time about 498 shows ago where people didn’t think we’d even make maybe, I don’t know, 50 or even at the end of the first year. So, we’re still here. 500 feels like a mini milestone,” he said, before noting rivals Eddie McGuire and Luke Darcy had clocked up 11 years on air over on Triple M.

He also paid tribute to the Triple M duo who are about to depart, before encouraging his audience to “call in with your Eddie burns”.

The highlight of the celebration, however, was O’Connell’s throwback to his first radio gig in the UK in the 1990s.

The exchange has O’Connell encountering an awkward conversation with a child, who, let’s say, doesn’t quite get the joke.

When Christian’s radio career started in 1998, he did a Saturday afternoon show (with no pay) just to get the hang of everything. And he’s desperate for the Football scores – you have to hear this!

O’Connell made industry headlines earlier this week for prematurely congratulating Marty Sheargold on getting the now-available Triple M Melbourne Breakfast gig.

O’Connell has contended he doesn’t actually have any insider knowledge on his radio rivals, but thinks Sheargold would be awesome in the role.
