Chris Dzelde: ‘we can get through anything as long as we are together’

Happy Valentine’s Day lovers!

Time to shine the spotlight on another loved-up radio industry couple.

Chris and Mel Dzelde have seen each other at their most vulnerable during their marriage.

Despite Mel’s ongoing battle with cancer and Motor Neurone Disease, they remain a strong and resilient couple.

And while they retired from the industry in 2020 to concentrate on Mel’s health, they remain firmly entrenched in the radio family.

How did you meet? What attracted you to each other?

We met at Adelaide’s Mix102.3 when Mel was appointed producer of the KYM, ALI & DZELDE Breakfast show (with Kym Dillon and Ali Clarke). We became good friends in the “trenches”, but there was no romance at the time.

When did you decide to get married?

And what was the proposal like? It was Australia Day 2012. We’d been living together for a while and sitting outside in the sun that day Chris just said, “Hey, why don’t we just get married!?” It was kinda off the cuff, but we knew it was a perfect idea!

What do you do together for fun?

After so many years in radio, it’s perhaps not surprising that we love music, so getting to a live show, simply sharing a Playlist, or watching a concert video is fun for us. Going through the old records and CDs is always a blast.

What are the pros and cons of being married to someone in the same industry?

We loved working together. To be able to blow off steam about what happened at work with someone who really understands is enormously helpful. We learned how to be a great team together. The only con was trying to organise a surprise when you’re in the same office /studio every day!

What is the biggest strength of your relationship?

That we know we can get through ANYTHING as long as we’re together!

Are you a radio couple? I’d love to hear your story. Email [email protected].
