Bianca and Tom open up about mental health struggles

Reporter

Radio host Bianca Dye this week joined forces with former AFL footballer Tom Derickx on Channel 7’s The Morning Show, to raise mental health awareness as part of R U OK? Day

Tom opened up about the mental health challenges he faced during his playing days.

Bianca talked about her own struggles with panic attacks and anxiety – and how the journey has shaped her as a person

“In the early days, I had to keep it a secret because I was ashamed,” she revealed. “There was so much of a stigma around mental health.”

Thankfully, we’ve come a long way, but Bianca says it’s not just about asking the question R U OK? It’s also important we follow up on it.

“It’s about encouraging conversations that could save a life.”

Thanks for covering guys! I’m so passionate about helping end the stigma around something one in three of us will struggle with at some stage of our life – as a proud ambassador for RUOK? Day for the last 10 years thank you on behalf of the organisation and every other radio announcer and Aussie that gets any form of anxiety, depression or struggles with any type of mental health illness namaste

Nice work for highlighting this. The more our industry can do to bring light and de-stigmatise mental health, the better for everyone in the community. Well done Bianca and Tom – your vulnerability and sincerity will no doubt help save lives.
