Because disability should be no barrier to a future in radio: RadioVoice turns 5

Reporter

RadioVoice – the exclusive program giving people with disabilities the opportunity to experience radio and podcasting – has celebrated its fifth birthday.

Led by Director Daz Smith, RadioVoice encourages people in the disability sector to step outside their comfort zone.

This year, the Melbourne-based program was named a finalist in the Equity & Inclusion category at the 2026 City of Casey Community Awards.

As Smith told Radio Today in 2022,The inspiration came from an opportunity to work with a young man who is legally blind and with a disability, who had a passion for radio, early in 2021.”

Fast forward to 2026, and Smith says what started out as a simple idea has grown into something pretty special:

“And it’s all because of the people who’ve been part of it,” Smith said on LinkedIn. “To every student who has walked through the studio door, sat behind a mic, and given it a go … this milestone belongs to you.”

“Some of you were nervous. Some didn’t know where to start. All of you have left your mark.”

“RadioVoice has never just been about radio or podcasts. It’s about confidence, growth, and finding your voice. And watching that happen over the past five years has been something I’m genuinely proud of.”

“5 years down … and we’re only just getting started. Thank you for being part of the journey.”
