ABC’s Red regrets?

ABC Radio Melbourne is maintaining a brave face after another poor performance by its Breakfast duo of Jacinta Parsons and Sami Shah.

After ditching long-term presenter Red Symons last year, the Breakfast show continues to shed listeners and has lost nearly a full point since survey one.

Survey four has the show on an audience share of 9.2% (-0.4), which is more than two points than for the same time last year with Symons at the helm.

Despite yesterday’s result, the broadcaster doesn’t seem too fazed by the numbers, telling Fairfax:

“The ABC sees the results of this survey as steady, with minor movements across all programs and across most markets around the country.”

But the ABC’s loss is 3AW’s gain in Breakfast with Ross Stevenson and John Burns maintaining their AM breakfast dominance with a 19.2 share of the audience.

As for Red, he might be having the last laugh. He was recently announced as a regular guest on the Neil Mitchell Show.

Maybe if the ABC stopped trying to be so competitive, concentrated on broadcasting relevant news and current affairs, and didn’t pay for “teams” in most of the metro markets, they could save a few bucks and live within their means.

I’d love to go through their books and start saving them some money. I bet there is plenty to slash and burn that nobody would even notice or miss.
