2DayFM’s Grant Denyer says female-heavy ‘Today’ lineup will fail
2DayFM Breakfast host and former Sunrise weatherman Grant Denyer doesn’t believe that Nine’s new Today lineup will succeed without Karl Stefanovic.
The show returned on Monday, sans Karl, with Deb Knight hosting the show alongside Georgie Gardner.
Former triple j newsreader Brooke Boney is the new entertainment reporter, while Tom Steinfort is the new newsreader and Tony Jones joins for sports.
“I don’t think it will [work],” said Grant on 2DayFM Breakfast.
He applauded the move, calling it “progressive” and “clever” because they beat Sunrise to a similar move.
“Sunrise’s next move was that they were going to remove the male-and-female combination when Kochie retires — it was going to be two girls.”
But Grant isn’t convinced that the two hosts will be entertaining enough.
“What you’ve got to remember is that breakfast TV is entertainment first — it’s bright lights, it’s bright colours, there’s cash cows, there’s money being thrown at you as a viewer … it’s a poker machine, is what it is.
“So you’ve now got two very experienced, serious, wonderful interviewers — incredible journalists — but you don’t have entertainers.
“… the more colourful you are, the louder you are, the more you win.”
If the new lineup fails to bed in, will they bring back Karl? Or, with one year left on his contract at Nine, could Karl make it on Breakfast radio in 2020?

Sounds like Grant pitching for a job at Seven. Looking to make the switch from Ten ?
So, it’s all bright lights, cash cows and the bombardment of viewers. I wonder if Grant has watched ABC Breakfast? It doesn’t have any crowd grabbers, just viewers are flocking.
Go figure.
“ABC Breakfast?” “viewers are flocking”. Really??? Recent official OzTam figures Sunrise – 455,000; Today – 366,000; ABC News Breakfast – 245,000. Doesn’t look much like “flocking” to me!
Sour grapes Grant? Did you miss out on the job? Or implying you could do better? Us Morning tv viewers don’t need or want another village idiot on the shows we watch for news and current social discussions
Is it just me, or is it super weird to hear a breakfast show talking about Sunrise in this manner?
I know this is a thing, its content – but the way they’re discussing it, it feels like I’m in an 11am post-show meeting with my colleagues shitting on the oppo.
Maybe focus on what your talents are come broadcasting, and not having a crack at something that a) has no bearing on your ratings and b) reaaaalllllly doesn’t mean jack to your audience

Thats a bit rich coming from Grant Denyer, the host of one struggling show provides his take on another show. Didn’t his TV show fail and 2Day ratings well say no more.
Wrong again ! The Today show won Sydney this week against Sunrise. Grant you sure you weren’t talking about 2day not Today ????
