Former Assistant Editor

UNESCO’s World Radio Day is held on February 13 each year, and is a day to celebrate the medium of radio, which plays such a key part in the lives of millions worldwide.

2018 sees the seventh edition of the day held, with the theme of ‘Radio and Sports’.

Today, UNESCO invites all stations, regulatory bodies and related organisations to celebrate radio’s contribution to democratic debate through information, entertainment and audience interaction.

In celebration of the day, Brussels-based trade association of television and radio sales egta has collated a series of testimonials on how radio can help brands and marketers achieve their marketing objectives.

UNESCO recently announced that World Radio Day 2018 will focus on three sub-themes; Diversity in Sports Coverage, Gender Equality in Sports Coverage and Peace and Development through Sports Coverage.

World Radio Day was fist celebrated in 2012 following its decleration by the UNESCO General Conference, and was subsequently adopted as an international day by the UN General Assembly.

“On World Radio Day, let us celebrate both radio and sports as ways of helping people achieve their full potential,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
