Too much on their plate? New KIIS Melbourne breakfast duo to continue doing NZ drive show

Former Features Editor

Australian-bound radio duo Jase & PJ announced their NZ drive show replacements yesterday, but it’s not who you would expect.

Jase Hawkins (an Aussie ex-pat) and Polly “PJ” Harding – who will be bringing their awkward antics to KIIS Melbourne for breakfast next year as a replacement for Matt & Meshel – confirmed that they will continue to host ZM’s drive show, broadcasting out of Australia.

In terms of on-air hours – presuming that their current four-hour drive timeslot remains the same – equates to about 3,075 hours behind the mic in 2018.

The pair revealed the news on-air yesterday afternoon, which came as a relief to listeners who assumed the worst after hearing the drive hosts would be moving on after almost seven years.

“Who better to replace us than us?” Hawkins joked.

“Can’t wait to have you driving us home next year, even if it’s from overseas,” their current station ZM wrote in a blog post confirming the news.

There is no denying they are hard workers – in May this year the duo completed a 52-hour radio marathon, going one hour better than their broadcasting effort for charity in 2016.

They spent 52 hours in the studio, on-air and on a Facebook livestream with no sleep and no breaks, while also being required to speak after every two to four songs so they audience know they were still there.

So are they just going to be replaying brekky content or actually planning to record NZ specific stuff?

Sounds like it will be a wonderful world of repeats from a different country anf time slot.

Two thoughts – This is just a smart play to give more time to find a new show… Seems like ZM don’t have any better options yet. Lack of development and trying to just buy stars who are signed up to other stations. This gives them time to keep looking…

The other more the sad thing – Its the audience that gets ripped off. Nice to have familiar voices for their audience in NZ … But in reality one audience will get a poorer product – Either Melbourne because of a distraction over the ditch where valuable time is needed to build a show and relationships with stakeholders or NZ (where they the 3rd ranked Drive Show) who will when they get tired and realise that they are 2 people not from Melbourne who have to work the city to make it… and will leave NZ with its sloppy seconds.

But good luck! Prove us all wrong! Cant wait for all new position of Melbourne’s “awkward Breakfast radio”

Think you’ll find it’s repeats of breakfast. So maybe work for a production guy. That’s all.
