“No interviews for the sake of interviews”: Young guns Gem Maddox & Nic Kelly launch new music show

Former Assistant Editor

This Week Tonight with Gem Maddox & Nic Kelly aired for the first time on Sunday evening across both Sea FM Central Coast and Hit104.7 Canberra.

The new show sees two of Australia’s most exciting young radio talents cover thought-provoking conversations posed by the world’s biggest hitmakers, while they spin the best new hits and look into their crystal ball to discover the next big thing.

Gem and Nic spoke with Radio Today about how it all came together.

“I gave Nic a call on a Friday night with an idea, we did a demo and it all started from there,” explained Gem.

“We’re so lucky with the timing because it all happened so fast. I’m thrilled to do the show with Nic because he’s passionate about music and one of the best music jocks in the country and I’ve always loved his work.

“I do afternoons on Hit 104.7 and Nic is over on the Central Coast, so we thought it would be cool to air it on both stations.”

The show not dissimilar to Ash London‘s National Nights show on the Hit Network, but Gem and Nic make it clear they are aiming to offer Central Coast and Canberra listeners something with a point of difference.

“Ash is an idol of both of ours, and we made a conscious decision from the outset to not just try and be a second rate Sunday night effort of what Ash does so well, being the Hit Network’s new music tastemaker,” said Nick.

“Instead we decided to craft a show centred less around new music, and more around the conversations hitmakers are having, whether on their socials, in interviews or through their songs.”

In their first episode, Gem and Nic spun Aussie tracks by the likes of Amy Shark, Alison Wonderland and Vance Joy as well as international tunes from The Weeknd, Khalid and Panic! At The Disco.

The first episode went off without a hitch last Sunday, and the newly formed duo gave Radio Today some hints about what’s coming next.

“Now that we’re actually doing it, we’re keeping our minds much more open to content opportunities that come from the things artists are talking about,” Nick said.

“I want to use the platform to talk openly about the things I care about – especially mental health & LGBT issues, both of which are wide-open conversations in music right now.

“We’re also going to start chatting to artists we really care about (can guarantee there will be no ‘interviews for the sake of interviews’) and building our relationship on a shared love for pop music.”

‘This Week Tonight with Gem & Nic Kelly can be heard on Sundays from 6-8pm weekly on 101.3 Sea FM Central Coast and Hit104.7 Canberra.
